This thread is about video games in general. It is about what come to your mind each time someone gives a hateful coment or simply when someone turns you down during a gaming conversation.
Be aware that this thread is not about who's right, so don't start a fight or a war, it used to express your feelings and ideas. Some may agree, some may disagree, it happens.
This is appled to any kind of gaming console, any game, any thing related to gaming in general, including Wario.

In my personal experiance, as an example, when I'm trying to have a decent conversation about games, and someone talks about Mario or Wario, I reply:
"Yes, I do enjoy a good Mario game, and usually I try to get my hands on those..."
As someone has always to break the subject, replying: "Who cares, Super Mario games are all the same anyway..."
I hate that kind of comment, since we all know that this fact is not true. It is a fact that all games are inspired by the same idea (Super Mario Bros.) but they are all different as to how they work. If people took time to try them, they would surely think differently.

Also another thing that makes me a bit sad is the fact that everyone puts the "He likes Mario" label on you when you actually clearly like Wario games. It's another way to say that no one knows or cares about Wario.

But there is one more, sometimes people refer to Nintendo as being for kids... and then I think about the games I still have to finish due to their level of dificulty... (Super Mario 3D World - Champions Road.... Hard as f***)

Anyway, I won't spend more time on this, leave your stories and what you think about those foreign opinions, so we can share the little pain between us.

PS: In Portugal, Nintendo is crap. It is rare to find someone here who really loves Nintendo and their work. Often people like Playstation or XBox. And even then often refer to Nintendo as "Pokemon"(as an Anime) or "Super Mario", but never as Nintendo or "Zelda" (Yes, here 95% of the people never heard of Zelda).
 
My thoughts exactly, that's usually what I say, but it irritates me nonetheless... Also, I don't want to go this route as some users in here may also like Call of Duty.
 
You misunderstood my point. Basically, point out that what they complain about is true of all major series, including their own 'favorites'. Neither Mario or Call of Duty are bad franchises or games. What I'm saying is that the perceived similarities aren't bad, because they're exactly what the fans and people in general want.
 
Nice to learn you're Portuguese, BlueJackG; I had read that alongside your description for Blue Stars but was distracted at the time I made the post and forgot to mention it. I'm Brazilian, so we share the same language, and sadly the same lack of Nintendo fans you described.
 
I hate when people think i'm an Undertale fanatic because i like the Mother games.
First of all Undertale is good, Damn god. But it doesn't compare to Mother 3 or maybe 2. Better than the first one though. (all rants aside)
It annoys me because i was playing M3 fan translation on my GB micro when on the bus to work and a young lady saw the game and said "your one of the Undertale goons right". I was polite about and said no but on the inside i exploded with saltiness and i could taste it.
TL;DR I hate it when they say "Ya like UrfBoun, You myst liek UndaTail two"
 
Well, I do admit, I may be guilty of that; I could never get used to the controls in Sonic Riders, no matter how hard I tried, and eventually just gave up on it.

Also, "You lost the race, try again. Oh, you lost the race, try again. Repeat ad naseum. Oh, you finally won the race? Watch a cutscene where Sonic loses the race we forced you to win!"

And I'm someone who was able to enjoy Sonic 2006. And Sonic Heroes...on PS2.

That said, you know what I came to hate? When they saynsomething is the way of the future. Rarely is it amusing, and the more people say it? The more likely it might just become a thing of the past.

I dont think people really get the history when they make that^ comparison : p

Ive seen people even say that anytime theres a big sword in a JRPG, that they stole it from Final Fantasy, even though FF was not the first piece of fiction to have such a thing : p

  • That having a open world makes a game better. - Okay just because a game is open world and nonlinear, does not make a game better or even good. Seriously linearity is not bad people.
  • That *Insert any notable game creator here* is god. No they are not, they are human just like you and me, and like any other human, they tend to make stupid decisions that can ultimately destroy a game. (Like Shegeru Miyamoto or Keji Infaune) and this isn't just limited to games either, *Cough* George Lucas *Cough*
  • That Causal Gamers are not real Gamers. - Ugggh I hate this attitude, okay they may not play games all night like "Hardcore" gamers do, but that doesn't make them not gamers. They just play em more casually then the average gamer would. (Hence the term "Casual Gamer")
 
Im weird about calling myself a gamer. I mean technically I am, of course. But too many people treat it like its a special club, and that like your on the same team or something. I often dont like talking to gamers irl cuz they always go on and on about stuff I know nothing about and act weird that Im not up to date on all the latest news. I just wanna enjoy the handful of games I like, I dont care about the culture and latest headlines : p

I mean, its goofy, and yeah you cant use the L or Z button depending on where you hold it. But I mean really, for anyone who has ever played a N64, did it really make a difference? : p I did not miss the L button, haha. I like the controller, I think its really cool and memorable. Like thats the 90's to me, those big funny looking colorful N64 controllers, haha. I love them : p
(The control stick was junk, though)

I never refer to myself as a "gamer". In fact, I dislike how when people say "game" or "gaming" these days they automatically attribute it to video games and nothing else. I remember when "gaming" used to be associated with card games, gambling, etc. My father scoffed in disbelief at how video games stole the definition of "gaming". Heheh.

I completely agree. Those days of Sega VS. Nintendo VS. Sony were very exciting and colourful times.
Back then you felt far more invested in the games you purchased. Video game culture is so wasteful today, remember when people used to just appreciate owning a handful of titles and a system? You also just appreciated the experience of playing a video game! Today anyone can download and play any game, anywhere, anytime. (Using phones and emulators) Not saying it's bad, but it really depreciates the value and makes the experience feel less privileged. That special feeling of privilege has been lost.

-Every time someone goes on a spiel about "how it's not about graphics, it's about fun", as if you weren't responding to something that doesn't really exist and as if good visual design and "gameplay" aren't inextricably tied. Bonus point if there's a completely bogus implication grafx dick-waving somehow didn't exist during prior generations.


-People Who dismiss all of From Software's games before Demon's Souls. It's especially funny because games like Armored Core and King's Field were bashed by braindead journos and unfunny eckbeards for the exact same reason the Soul games are praised today.

I'd go on an extended rant about how I hate the false dichotomy between "realism" and "fun" but it would make me look even more unhinged.
