Official Waluigi Thread

Yeah, but Miyamoto had something to do with Waluigi, making him more relevant.

Er yikes. Here goes the half-assed "relevant" argument again. I feel like "relevant" is basically a buzzword to try to make it sound like you're actually say something.
Daisy is technically more relevant than Waluigi. Why? Because she appeared in an important Nintendo game. It doesn't mean jackshit if Miyamoto was "had something to do with Waluigi", the only thing he did was approve of the name and block a Warupichi from developing.

If you want to go further, at least Daisy was created by Nintendo. Waluigi is Camelot's baby.

Waluigi is cool and I'm sad to say I gained more appreciation for him after seeing that Wario Date fan made dating sim.

I enjoyed Wario Date, but I have to be frank with you. I don't care for Waluigi's characterization to be one of a socially awkward character who uses self-boasting to hide his insecurities and make himself appear more aloof than he actually is. This particular characterization of Waluigi is pretty common in the Mario fanon, which I suppose is because a lot of video game fans can relate to a socially awkward character who despises people but secretly feels rejected from them. I mean, I understand his character is somewhat like that normally but the fanon spin is supposed to be more.. sympathetic and relatable? I dunno. I don't really like it at all. It's too mundane and typical for me.. pretty boring as well. I prefer Waluigi as a character who is more impassioned by his own envy and jealousy, and prefers discord over stability even if he has something good, and only feels sadness and pity for himself. I think it's pretty amusing to have him sinister and creepy with vacant harshness but also erratic thinking and extraordinary weakness. ...That's just me tho...

Charles Martinet himself says he plays up on Waluigi's funny and self-pitying aspects more than his belligerent aspects because it's more suitable for a Mario villain. And he's completely right.

Yeah, but if you look on her wiki article, you'll notice that she was absent in the SNES era, when was Waluigi that absent? (I know there were a few games, though the developers gave one or two excuses) And also Mona could be considered the closest Warupichi we got.

I see where you're coming from and I agree.

Honestly I don't think I've ever played a game with Waluigi in it. Everything I know of the character has just been me reading articles, seeing youtube videos or seeing people talk about him. That being said, until I started getting interested in WarioWare (which sparked my main interest in Wario), I didn't care to know because I found Waluigi to fall by the wayside too much and not have his own way of standing out from most of the rest of the cast.

I like the Wario Date interpretation for the fact that it was the first time I ever felt anything strong for Waluigi. That being said, the characterization is weak and it doesn't do justice for his looks at all. I don't like how you can pull eyeliner out of his pocket, for example, and it's trying to play up the fact that Waluigi is putting on a farce for being bad and is bad at it instead of having his own motives for greed and envy like Wario and is meant to just look like a bad guy. Basically, it seems like he's pretending to be an antagonist like Wario but fails.

Other people around here have been bringing up something that really explains well why I don't really care for a lot of Nintendo franchises, and Mario in particular. Characterization for just about everyone is weak and they don't use what they have. Most of the stereotypes and information started being put out there 30 years ago (for characters that have been around that long anyway) and it's either been retconned or changed depending on what you're talking about. What you addressed as far as how Waluigi was portrayed in WD is stereotypical and unfair to the character. It's just that what else do you really have to work with him? I don't mean that as an antagonistic question, I just honestly don't know what Nintendo has done for him except put him in sports games, give him stats, and explore his personality in quick one line quips in victory or losing cutscenes.

When I say that though I don't mean that Waluigi doesn't deserve to be in more games. He does. He deserves to have awesome personalization like you described. It's just Nintendo hasn't done it or I've really, really missed something big (which if I am someone please tell me).

I hope I'm not sounding wishy washy either here. I see where you're coming from and it's a cool idea. I just wish that I could see more personalization from him from Nintendo and have them evoke more interest for me than a fan game making a spoof on dating sims. And at the same time, I'm glad that even that little bit of interpretation of his character exists there because it's nice to not see him running around in sports games for once.

I don't know why Princess Daisy was absent in the SNES era and I'm not going to pretend to know why either.

However, if you compare Daisy's introduction on a portable gaming system in 1989 vs Waluigi's introduction on the N64 in 2000 the contexts of the circumstances are completely different. Waluigi was created by Camelot to be Wario's partner in Mario Tennis. Daisy AND Wario were created by Nintendo SPD since they didn't want to use characters that weren't their own. The purpose and image behind the character directly influences their relevancy and importance to the game its in. I'd say the very fact that Daisy first appeared in a Nintendo-made game as an important plot device (albeit, a substitution, but still there) gives her more prestige and importance over Waluigi. The only time Waluigi had SOMETHING over a plot in a Mario game (not even mainline) was DDR Mario Mix where he was a faux-villain to the actual villain of the game, Bowser.

There's no other argument for Waluigi's supposed "relevancy" over Daisy other than the very weak "but she didn't appear in other games for a long time!"
So?
And besides, I don't understand why this a legit criticism anyway. Relevancy doesn't influence my liking over the character. Seems like people are just obsessed with image and popularity.

Captain Syrup is more of a Warupichi than Mona is because she actually follows similar character principles to Peach (being a mirror to Wario) while succeeding in being a good polar opposite to her (a darker beauty, more active than passive, greedy, selfish, harmful to the protagonist, ect)

Mona is more like "Wario's friend/love interest" than anything. Not really similar to Peach at all. Plus the Wario Land games are an adventure style like the Super Mario series. WarioWare is a completely different series.

Yeah, I agree. As I said before, that is a popular fanon theory (that is maybe going to be embraced by Nintendo in the future soon? dunno). The thing that bothers me about that is it just seems like a quick and lazy characterization. I mean, it's such an easy and cheap route to jump to. Creepy and miserable character? Oh he must be trying to be someone he's not since he's actually just lonely inside and the people he's around (Wario) are influencing him negatively! It's a really unflattering development of his character overall, especially to Wario's. It makes Wario look like some sadistic asshole who peer pressures his friends into behaving like him. I understand why it's popular but I despise it even more since I know why innately. Frustrating.

100%. Especially the bolded part. It's a pity, really. I suppose it's to make the characters more relatable and easier to project your traits into. There's a reason why Nintendo IPs are so notoriously popular.
What is being retconned in Mario characters exactly? I know they threw away Peach's magic being relevant to the Mushroom Kingdom since the original storyline of Peach being kidnapped by Bowser was because she had magic able to restore her subjects from turning into plants while Bowser took over. They seemed to retconned to whole "exotic, faraway" aspect of Daisy's character too, since Daisy's Mario Kart courses are now based in landscapes similar to the Netherlands and France as opposed to mythical Far East and Polynesia, ect.

Nintendo puts a little hints here and there of characterization in different parts of games (sometimes sources outside the games, too). It's probably bored employees who have harsh guidelines to follow so they sneak in somethings they can get away with. Waluigi IS SUPPOSED to be more intelligent than Wario and w/ the glowing eyes effect in M64 and another Mario spinoff game he's probably more likely to be darker than Wario. They had something interesting going on with his character at first though. His main colors used to black and his theme music was quite sombre. I don't mind the current portrayal of him though since it's more suiting for a Mario game.

It's really all pure speculation at this point. We see from his animations on some spinoffs he's definitely more romantic and flamboyant than Wario. They are releasing a current line of Waluigi, Boo, Wario, Daisy, and Rosalina amiboos. I feel like Nintendo is doing this as to measure characters popularity against other characters, then they'll see what to do with them after that (esp with Daisy, Waluigi, and Rosalina)

Exactly! The potential to do things with Waluigi is there and it's sad that it's relegated to that, generally speaking. Fandom or Nintendo or whoever, Waluigi deserves more. If Nintendo can take liberties with Wario in two different series and have the games do well, they can do the same with Waluigi.

The first part hit one of my largest problem with Nintendo IPs and characters. When I was younger, video games were a huge escape for me and projecting my own traits into a character was the last thing I wanted to do. Now that I'm older, I don't do that, but when I play a game, I play a game to get away from adulting, life, and whatnot. I also want to enjoy characters that can stand up on their own and provide some sort of story. I guess I've discovered why I prefer Sonic over Mario to an extent, too, but that's beside the point.

The bolded part is more of what I meant with retconning, and I typed it in a tired stupor. Back when I was a little little kid, Bowser was King Koopa. Peach was Princess Toadstool (I know that's still her last name technically but that was the official name). Mario's last name "was" Mario like the 1993 movie stated and we didn't have Miyamoto fervently denying it until 2011 or so when he finally caved in and just made it his last name. Mario & Luigi were from Brooklyn and were shown to do plumbing. A lot of this is from external media like the cartoons, more than likely didn't have Nintendo execs run through the ideas with a fine toothed comb, and I understand that point. However, there was characterization there. Mario & Luigi both felt like characters that had their own charm and weren't just blank slabs that were meant to project anything you wanted onto them. I mean, look at Hotel Mario too. That game was an absolute disaster but I prefer that incarnation of both M&L over what's present now because there was something there. There were so many liberties and ideas expressed with the property and it was really nice to see all of these interpretations. The fact that Nintendo now has a firm leash on just about everything has just kind of killed that old, fresh spirit that the late '80s and early '90s had and left so, so many problems. As a result too, it's just killed off just about anything that isn't a major character or essential to the series.

The underlined portion is something that's both good and bad. I went to read the description of his personality on the MarioWiki and that's just sad. So, so sad. There's so much potential and it's squandered in an attempt to be as family friendly as possible. They can still work with that so much and make it just as family friendly but they don't. I don't know what else to say except that I'm nearly speechless and I really agree with you so much more now.

I'm hoping that the Waluigi and Daisy amiibos do well. I'm honestly sick and tired of seeing New Super ____ Bros (#) (console) every other year. It would be so refreshing to get a take on something with Wario, Waluigi, and Daisy together. Do like what you suggested in a reply to another person (or someone else) where you use Sarasaland instead of the all encompassing Mushroom Kingdom.

Doesn't Waluigi seem like such a romantic?

I think his hair looks like that in Mario Party 7 due to it being an action shot. Now I want to get a good look of Wario without his hat but I don't think that's happened in too many games. I can only think of Super Mario 64 DS.
