Puyo Puyo

I do think, based solely on the track record, some cynical thoughts are justified.

If it makes you feel better, I'm already planning on importing. I don't care if I gotta look up guides, I don't wanna miss this. Of course, I'd need a Japanese 3DS, but I'll get to that when the time comes (whenever that is).

If it does get brought over, great! But I have serious doubts it will.

Oh, hey look it's Sig :

He looks great too, my one question is: why is he of all people a boss did he question why he can't be a main character anymore?

The battles seem interesting. It seems you can swap out characters or something and there is some sort of item implementation. I wonder if we'll get something like the special abilities in Puyo~n.

There may be something like that here, at least the MP meter gives that impression and I'd expect everyone to have at least one special move that makes use of the meter and given that you aren't limited to the four girls and can also recruit other characters to use (at least if I read the articles correctly) then it would make sense for everyone to have something unique.

Speaking of ~n, since we know that there are going to be 17 rulesets (with Tsu and Fever already confirmed) I think it would be interesting to discuss which other rules we expect to come back and which ones we would want to see.

For my money I'd say that the Original ruleset, Mission Puyo and Endless Fever are very likely in.

As for the ones I'd like to see back Pair Puyo from 20th would be the big one, althought Sun is also one I'd like to be kept and I did mention ~n's ruleset coming back before and I would welcome it back, but only under the condition that there is actual balancing this time around, as opposed to three special moves being better then the rest by a landslide and good chunk being completely worthless (poor Schezo).

How about you guys?

He looks great too, my one question is: why is he of all people a boss?
Amusingly enough I just answered my own question, there is a Boss Battle mode mentioned in the previews and I quote:
Additionally, there is a local battle mode called “Boss Battle with Everyone” where up to four players can cooperatively take on a boss. It uses the RPG Mode’s battle system as its base, and introduces a “Chance Time” system where, by meeting certain conditions, you can enter Fever Mode to deal big damage.
チャンス is chance (or chansu) in japanese and you can see it written out on one of the Sig screenshots, so it's not part of the story mode.

What interests me the most about the sceenshots is that one shows that you can use items in this mode, which makes me wonder how the item distribution is going to work and whether or not they are carried over from the RPG mode or you just get them before the match, at any rate, I'm interested to learn more about it. I'm having way too much fun with dissecting every damn detail of this game.

I'm really interested to see how what else they do to try to tie in RPG and puzzle elements. As for modes I'd like to see back...

I would like to see Sun mode again.

15th had a lot of modes but I didn't feel like most of them were very good. I mostly liked Excavation and Ice Puyo from that game.

I would like to see an enhanced version of the original Henshin mode from 7. If they were to include that I hope that either both players are in the same mode or remove the option for both since that was completely useless.

From 20th...The endless Henshin modes would be nice. Slot I thought was pretty fun if a bit random. The less gimmicky modes like Active and foursight I guess it's called I'd like to see back as well. Pair Puyo I thought was interesting mode and I'd also like to see it back. Minor but I also hope more characters have special win quotes when paired up.

I gotta say, I really love the presentation so far. For the games starting with 15th Anniversary onward I always thought the presentation, while aesthetically pleasing, was a bit on the limited side. Recycled art and limited cutscene sprites and all that. The cutscenes look really great and now I want to see more of the animations.

So, a member on Puyo Nexus translated what the magazine scans say:

25th Anniversary! The upcoming Puyo Puyo is an action puzzle RPG!! "Puyo Puyo Chronicle"
The newest Puyo title celebrates Puyo Puyo's 25th anniversary with the aptly abundant content, including battles between a strong enemy and a team of 3 characters, and between such teams from players online/offline.

World & Story: An Adventure in Another World
The protagonists in the RPG mode are our Arle and Carbuncle. In Primp Town, a strange book falls out of the sky to them and sucks them into another world. There she somehow meets Satan, who says "Arle, you are the Hero who is to save this world!" but something is odd about him - why would he be there in the first place? After his abrupt disappearance, she meets and teams up with a local girl Arii. As directed by her, they start a journey which should send her back...
Arii (CV: Honoka Inoue): A mysterious girl who had been looking for the prophesied Hero. Her trademark phrase is "Let's get intimate!"

Battle & System: "Skill Battle", where you organize a team for a battle
In the RPG mode, you organize a team of up to 3 characters. You attack by erasing Puyo and sending nuisance Puyo to opponents (who will attack too after a certain period of time). Combo pop and large chains remain effective, but don't worry, you can strengthen your characters if you're not good at them.
During a battle, two types of "Skills" change the flow of the game: "Auto Skill" that automatically activates when conditions are met, and "Special Skill" that you cast from Magic Point. When conditions are met, a skill is upgraded. Use them well to beat strong enemies and boss characters!
Heaven Ray: With Arle's Special Skill, all colored Puyo in the bottom 2 rows change blue, and more if upgraded.
(Besides the RPG mode, of course it also has the usual puzzle mode! Popular 17 rules are available including Tsu and PPF.)
(note: according to the official webpage, Skill Battle is one of the rules and several rules can be played online.)

Boss Battle: "Everybody Boss Battle", a co-op mode for up to 4 players
An offline mode where you challenge a boss with 1 character per player (4 player) / 2 character per player (2 player). In addition to the Skill Battle mechanism, each battle has an extra task (e.g. 12+ combo pop) which, when accomplished, lets you enter Fever Mode. Take advantage of this "Chance Time" to make large chains, use Skills, cause heavy damage to beat strong bosses and get the loots!

Sub-Quest: As Bountiful As 60+ Sub-Quests!
Besides the main quests relevant to the story, abundant sub-quests are provided. Accept a quest from people in need, visit a designated dungeon to solve the problem, and get rewards such as items and new characters.

Skill Battle seems to be similar to ~n (albeit far more geared towards singleplayer escapades), so our suspicions about there being something like it in the game seemed to have been on the mark.

I'm sure I'm getting on everyone's nerves at this point, but something interesting happened in regards to the Twitter #PuyoChroniclesForTheWest movement, because Sam Mullen (localization producer for Sega US) and John Hardin (PR) posted a joking tweet that adresses it :

Granted it doesn't mean anything since it is just a playful way of them saying ''yes, we have seen it'', but it is interesting since we usually don't get anyone at Sega to adress anything the western Puyo fanbase says or does, even with the Cranky Food Friends debacle they kept quiet, so it is quite noteworthy all things considert.

Well, some comapnies have said "We've seen it. We still say no." Anyone remember Mega Man Legends 3?

I'm honestly surprised to even get this much, but I won't be too optimistic. But I suppose there's only one way to find out. The slow, painful process of waiting.

The fact that they adressed it without directly saying no does strike me as curious, especially since it wouldn't have done them any harm to just stay quiet about it.

In the end it's just too early to tell, there has been a visible increase of awareness in the west about Puyo Puyo in recent years, Sega seems to have caught on to it and we have only known about Chronicles for a couple of days now, so we are still at a point were anything could happen, I'm still cautious about my hopes and expectations, but I wouldn't count it out to 100% at this point. At least it will be interesting to follow all of this.

Not very good I'd imagine, considering that they threw it out and practicly left it to die without any sort advertising or trying to make people aware of it's existence.

Because as we said before there was a sort of attempt at exposure via the Sega All Stars games. That was about it and they probably figured a puzzle game wouldn't sell well so they didn't really try. Kind of unfair to apply that sort of reference for the other Puyo games when you don't try but puzzle games nowadays don't tend to be hot sellers anymore so there's that.

Not helping its case was when many gamers seemed to reject anything that could be percieved as "kiddy." I vaguely remember Wind Waker's reception prior to its release.

It's regarded as a classic now, but at the time, many were dismissing it based on thebart style alone. My brother could be considered one of the few with any faith in it back then, and that was mainly because he trusted the team behind it to know what they're doing. Said trust paid off, granted, but still.

So with that in mind, who knows if Puyo Puyo would have had real success. But lack of advertisisng also hurt it, you're right, not to mention the US version of Puyo Pop Fever got even worse treatment than Europe; while Europe got most versions, the US only got the Gamecube and DS versions. but the more I look at it, the more I wonder if it would have really helped during those times.

Fortunately, we're long out of the era where people actually needed a campaign for getting so much as a blue sky in games, and if anything, backlash agains a lot of games that try to be "mature" is increasing.

Of course, this means nothing for Puyo Puyo's chances, and yeah, puzzle games don't sell the best. Knowing Sega, it may not be advertised. Like a lot of their non-Sonic properties. Granted, there's a new CEO in town there, but I can't promise he'll actually advertise things.

So basically, I can't be sure one way or another. If it looks like I'm contradicting myself, it's because I'm not sure, but I wanna hope.
