But yeah, two more days until PPT arrives in Europe, kinda funny to see ads from stores nearby feature Puyo among the upcoming games, after so many years of nothing.

Well, SEGA is (FINALLY) aware that Puyo Puyo gained quite the following ESPECIALLY in recent years, so I guess it isn't too surpiseng that

Alright, I just got it! (Had it for a day already; a bit late in posting this, but whatever)

Really hard at some parts in the story, but I'm at Act 7 now. Fusion play is really weird.

Gotta say the writing in this version is well done.

Speaking of which, I'll give Puyo Puyo SO many bonus points, if SOMEONE, ANYONE (doesn't even have to be Arle) shouts to Schezo: "DUDE! SERIOUSLY! PHRASING!!"

Oh the writing in the localization is fantastic, on one hand I'm not surprised since Minna was already really good in that regard as well, but after years of fan translations which are accurate, but a bit dry I can't help but really notice that extra spunk in the official translation.

Honestly, I LOVE the English script for PPT. For those who don't know, I can safely say SEGA CERTAINLY took a few liberties like they did with Minna 16 years ago. Honestly, this Twitter post sums up my feelings pretty easily:

They did, I have seen more literal translations of the japanese script long ago and frankly, taking liberties is one of the best things that you can do with this type of series, since many character tics or jokes can't really be emulated in a non-awkward way into other languages.

It's just really gorgeous and climactic looking, really makes me want to see a recreation of the scene, with a less limited presentation then what the original was stuck with.

Speaking of which, I find it rather interesting that any fanart involving the Strange Klug encounter in Fever 2 ALWAYS centers around the Sig version or at the very least shows him alongside Amitie and Raffine, goes to show which version ended up more memorable and iconic.
 
After looking at many fan translation of stuff and comparing them to official localization, it's clear to me that many fan translators don't seem to get how this kind of stuff works.
 
I wish those side characters in the story were playable too. Better yet, Ocean Prince should have revealed his hot human form. ;3;

Also, does anyone think that Feli looks like...Stocking?

They did, I have seen more literal translations of the Japanese script long ago and frankly, taking liberties is one of the best things that you can do with this type of series, since many character tics or jokes can't really be emulated in a non-awkward way into other languages.

Yeah, that was the point I forgot to make in my last post. The more literal fan translations of PPT's Japanese script weren't really what I'd call..."engaging". Personally, I feel that the fact that SEGA of America took WAAAY more liberties than any fan translators have taken REALLY helped PPT in the long run, just like with Minna. For example, Ringo's sharp wit really feels like it shines through more in in SEGA of America's official English translation than any fan translation I've seen. Heck, SEGA of America's own take on PPT's story resulted in Ringo being tied with Arle as my favorite Puyo character.

I mean, let's be honest. Can you really see Schezo's "I want you!" catchphrase or Risukuma's "I love you" spell theme working in the West all that well? The funny thing is that the fan translation of 15th Anniversary and PP7 seem to take more liberties than most fan translations and it would seem like something out of SoA's translation work, but still not as much.

Oh, yeah! I've seen this art before! One of the most epic pieces of Puyo fanart I've ever seen that didn't involve Madou Monogatari in some way. I wish Puyo Puyo 7 had fanart like this too with the cast facing off against Dark Arle/Ecolo...

If I saw a recreation of this scene (as well as Amitie's and Raffine's), I'd want it to be anime-styled. Specifically, in the style of Puyo Puyo~n's anime intro. Heck, even PP7's final battle against Dark Arle should have an anime artstyle like that as well.

Same here. I would have liked to see Yu, Rei, Ocean Prince, Ms. Accord, Popoi, and Rider play a bigger role than just minor guest roles. Also, I'm sure Ocean Prince's butler (from Fever 2) would agree with you, scarily enough...

Yeah. I haven't had time to fully delve into it yet, but I agree that the official translation is fantastic and captures the essence of the game perfectly.

I get that some people hate liberties in translations, and it's true that sometimes, translators can go too far. But sometimes, liberties are practically a requirement, especially if it involves wordplay that would be difficult, if not impossible to effectively translate in another language.

But if there's one thing I liked about Puyo Pop Fever's translation that I kinda miss here? I actually kinda liked Amitie's "Get really real" catchphrase there, and so far, I haven't heard it once. Maybe it's the lack of time I have, but still. That said, I find Christine Marie Cabanos's performance as Amitie to be stellar, myself. I liked Evelyn Huynh's performance in Puyo Pop Fever's dub, but I think Ms. Cabanos is quite an improvement. Call me silly.

But if this dub won't keep "Get really real" alive, well, I sure would like to. Call me silly.
 
Meanwhile, I'm struggling to find others online with the Vita version while saving up for a switch.

I will say that the Fever 2 and 15th translations patches were pretty good about that and frankly, sometimes you pretty much have to COMPLETELY re-write some of the dialogue, like with Yu and Rei, since so much of their dialogue is based on wordplay puns, that make no sense in any language other then japanese.

I'd be lying if I said that this wasn't my favorite scene in any Puyo game and I do feel like there are a number of aspects that make it so memorable:

-It's played rather seriously, in comparison to the Amite and Raffine versions, adding to the climactic feeling.

-It's quite the mood whiplash, the previous scene with Akuma already indicates that something is going to happen soon, but in general Primp is such a friendly and peaceful town that the appearence of a villain like Stange Klug really stands out.

-The music helps to create a feeling of suspense, it really brings out the situation of an ancient evil returning to the world, sounding foreboding, mysterious and even somewhat elegant, it's more ominous then any other Puyo Puyo song to date (not counting Madou) and Surge of the Crimson Scream speaks for itself (still my favorite Puyo song).

-It's a very relevent scene for both Sig and Strange Klug, since we finally find out what the deal with the spirit in Klug's book is, the library offering more backstory to explore helps too.

That's just my take on it, but it clearly made an impression on more then just a few fans.

Yeah, this is also why whenever I watch any anime subbed, I strictly expect the subtitles to not suck.

If you're going to translate manga in English or any anime subtitles, at least make the characters "sound" more like their English VA would, instead of a native Japanese speaker who's only slowly getting better at English.

For example, when reading Goku's lines in any translated Dragon Ball Z/Super manga, I always have trouble reading them in Sean Schemmel's voice.
 
Of course, if a character has no English VA, that's still no excuse for not even trying to make the translation sound like natural English.

I'm not the pickiest person on planet Earth, but I do like my translations to at least feel kinda natural.

Honestly, I miss Amitie's "Get real/Get really real" catchphrase too. If I'm being honest, there WAS something about it that gave Amitie "depth", for lack of a better word. That being said, I REALLY hope SEGA of America doesn't get rid of it all together. Also worth mentioning that Cabanos' work as Amitte was stellar as all get out. She really knocked it out of the park without making her sound annoying over time.

Speaking of Amitie, now might be as good a time for me to mention that I'm fairly hyped over a cutscene in PPT seems to...hint at Amitie x Sig being a thing.

All in all, PPT's (official) English script is nothing to scoff at IMO. The writing's timing is really on point, and the jokes and cleverness was really well thought-out. For real, props to SEGA of America for their work on translating PPT.

Yeah, the fan translations for Fever 2, 15th Anniversary, and PP7 were pretty OK in my eyes. Certainly not bad by any means but IMO, none of them hold a candle to PPT's official English script. Trust me, I'm very aware of Yu and Rei's ghostly puns being nearly untranslatable for Western audiences.

It is a little saddening how Strange Klug is currently the closest thing Puyo Puyo has a threatening villain since Doppel. Arle. I mean, I know Puyo Puyo isn't always one for dark moments, but I feel that it wouldn't kill them to have at least ONE new threatening villain at least once.

If Puyo Puyo Tetris is doing well, that's good!

I mean, the Switch version being in the top ten for game sales on Amazon the first few days, and the fact that I got the last PS4 copy from the store seemed to suggest it, but I was (and still kinda am) keeping my guard up; the video game industry is a place where a game can be considered underperorming despite selling millions, after all.

But if the game is doing well, that can only mean good things from here.

That is undeniably encouraging, now I'm just hoping that Europe brings good news well, I did my part today, even if I won't be able to do anything with the game until I have a Switch.

I should say that the japanese original is more ambiguous, but still implies the same thing, either way, despite my love for Arle x Sig I will admit that it is pretty cute even more so in the more blatant localized version and heck, while I'm not as big on Amitie x Sig as I used to be I still find quite a lot of appeal in it. Besides, being a Arle x Sig fan is nothing but suffering anyway.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I find something oddly precious about Sig calling her just Ami as a nickname, I hope that get's kept for potential future localizations.

That and even trying to write original dialogue for them is a headache and a half, trust me I know from experience, hope yah enjoy horrible puns ala' ''grave mistake'' or ''ghost of a chance''!

Either that or just bring Strange Klug back in a meaningful way, part of that is my bias talking since he is my favorite Puyo villain and 4th favorite character next to Sig, Schezo and Arle, but I do think that he has a lot going for him that has never been truly capitalized on.
