Puyo Puyo

There yah go, an old translation for Saturn Madou that has been commissioned a long time ago, complete with video links to read along with.

Wow! Thanks so much! I came across this once before, but I thought the link was gone forever! Really, thanks! One thing I do remember about this is that Arle x Lagnus was VERY lightly implied. Mostly by Rulue than anyone else.

Schezo get's annoyed at being called a pervert again and starts a fight, once defeated he just angrily walks off, though Witch seems disappointed to see him go and is clearly still fascinated with him.

Really? Interesting, I honestly hoped that she'd still be into him, if I'm being honest.

Apart from their usual dynamic there is also the fact that Schezo completely declines any chance to take Wish's powers, despite originally coming to the titular tower for the whole purpose of stealing them. By the end of the game he has teamed up with Witch to find her, learning that Wish is her grandmother and saved both of them from Dark Matter, even leaving them be, once they are reunited and notably happily giving up on his original intentions of taking her powers.

Wait, so does the titular tower belong to Wish herself? And Schezo came to steal HER powers? With her experience and power, I can't imagine that he'd have an easy time of trying...

Granted, despite his ultimately selfish pursuit of powers Schezo has always (well, post Madou 2 anyway) had a very clear moral center, but this is easily the most personal thing that he has ever done for anyone, considering how much the whole gaining powers thing means to his life, whether or not you think of this as a display of his hidden, but clearly existent nice aspects or him showing a particular amount of care for Witch specifically is up to your interpretation, I like to think that it's a bit of both.

Yeah, I'm certainly aware of how despite his (mostly) selfish streak, Schezo (for the most part, at least) has that "nice guy" tendency in him. He's basically a "Jerk with a Heart of Gold", if you will. Personally, I'd say it IS a bit of both as you suggested. Not only that, but I always had the idea that if Witch didn't feel any attachment towards Schezo (Romantic or otherwise) before the events of TotM, she CERTAINLY does now starting with this game.

I actually only came across this last year by complete accident, appearently it's been posted in some other places as well, but the links I found were always dead.

On a different note and something that has come to my mind again recently, but have you ever found yourself thinking that a song that you heard from somewhere completely different could fit a certain Puyo character better then any of their actual themes from the series?

I don't know where exactly it started, I assume it has to do with me often listening to music when writing, but I can't help but feel that this would make for a very fitting theme for Sig, I actually used a loop of this on Puyo Puyo VS 2 once while playing as him and it really works, for me at least.

Really? Huh, well at least you managed to find at least one link that works, right?

Believe it or not, I HAVE had thoughts like that every once in a while.

Huh, it's funny. With a theme THIS upbeat, I can see it working more for, say, either Amitie, Ally, or...SOMEONE from PP7, bar Ecolo.

This being said, here are some themes I can imagine for some characters.

Arle Nadja

(Just remove any and all references to Goku and replace them with Arle)

Carbuncle

Rulue

Schezo

Satan

Funny you said that, because I think a very upbeat tone is what suits Sig very well, given his lighthearted personality, not to mention the fact that it is energetic, but not too energetic, I always felt that his 20th theme went a bit too far into the energetic direction, while his 15th theme got it just right.

With that said I do like to put Sig together with more eneretic themes when writing, if only for certain moments, like this one for very heroic scenes, then again that may just be because it's such a beatiful hero theme, that reminds me of so many things that are beatiful about MMSF and how much I wish I could replicate said beauty in my writing.

Also on another note that just came to my mind, you know how Puyo has become somewhat known for seemingly having a limit of 24 characters in it's core roster, especially after Chronicle had 5 more, only for those 5 to be limited to two modes?

Well, if a roster with that number where limited to your 24 favorite characters then what would that look like?

In my case it would look like this:
tp24.png

Could have made an actual roster instead of just a collage, but ahm lazy
Some of it does seem a little off, mainly not having all the Tetris characters, but it is interesting to see how a 24 fav. roster can deviate from the current mainstay selection. Also if you ever wondered about my favorites beyond Sig then there yah go.

It's crazy, now with THIS theme, I see it working for anyone EXCLUSIVE to PPT, bar Ex and Zed, Witch, Lemres, or Doppelganger Arle.

Well, if a roster with that number where limited to your 24 favorite characters then what would that look like?

In my case, it would be:

Arle
Rulue
Schezo
Satan
Suketoudara
Draco
Witch
Amitie
Raffine
Sig
Klug
Lemres
Feli
Ringo
Risukuma
Maguro
Ecolo
Lagnus
Seriri
Harpy
Kikimora
Ms. Accord
Lidelle
Yu & Rei

I know, it seems pretty typical of your average Puyo roster, but I've just grown so accustomed to these characters, you know? That being said, if you don't mind, I have 6 more characters I'd like to add to make an even 30. I know you said only 24, but I just HAVE to add these guys.

Tarutaru
Succubus
Incubus
Jan
Doppelganger Arle
Panotty (This last one was REALLY hard for me to pick between him and Archan, BTW)

BTW, I saw your Tumblr blog and I just wanted to inform you that the little girl whose name you don't know from "Arle no Bouken", is supposedly named 'Septum'.

I don't know if you've ever noticed this, but in Arle's world, she doesn't seem to have anyone she can consider a friend outside of Carbuncle, as the closest things she has to friends ALL seem to have some sort of beef with her big or small, direct indirect.

That being said, 'Septum' is apparently the first Compile-era friend of Arle's that I've seen that DOESN'T seem to have any beef with her (as far as I'm aware). Supposedly, they've been friends since Arle was in kindergarten (yet we've never seen her in the games before now.....), and Arle no Bouken is her ONLY appearance in the series, no less. Unless she was in BOX...

Hey, if your top list just happens to contain most of the main cast then that's just how it is, I figured it would be interesting to see the deviations from the current norm that such a 24 favs. roster could provide, no matter how minor they may be.

I did see that yeah and frankly it is very much true that Arle during the pre-Fever games was rather friendless, even someone like Lagnus butts heads with her from time to time, whenever Arle does somehing to accidentally tick him off.

And no, she is not in BOX and with Arle no Bauken not using the Puyo Puyo name I honestly can't even make any assumptions on whether or not SEGA owns her.

Heck, Arle no Bouken doesn't even use the Madou Monogatari name, so we can't even figure out whether D4 Enterprise and/or Compile Heart owns her.

In fact, Arle no Bouken in general is in a weird legal area because it's neither branded as either Puyo Puyo or Madou Monogatari. Couldn't tell you who owns it now.

I hope you aren't bothered by how I sort of kept more to the usual cast for the most part.

Honestly, I know this is going to sound...weird, but...well, I almost kind of find it...I don't know, a bit unfortunate that the closest thing Arle has to (recurring) "friends" outside of Carbuncle and the post-Yo~n cast all have some kind of beef with her, and they mostly seem to hang out with her almost out of habit.

What's more, I find this a little surprising, considering Lagnus' (mostly) calm and collected demeanor in Saturn Madou towards Arle. Heck, he's essentially to Saturn Madou what Tee was to PPT. The only sane man in a world filled to the brim with (for the most part) nut-jobs with very interesting personality quirks. All this being said, it kind of makes me wish Septum was at least in a Madou game, just for the sake of giving Arle at least ONE TRUE companion outside of Carbuncle and the post Yo~n cast. Still, even I'm not all that sure just what her role is in Arle no Bouken. It's never been translated as to who exactly Septum is, aside from supposedly being one of Arle's closest friends since childhood.

And no, she is not in BOX and with Arle no Bouken not using the Puyo Puyo name I honestly can't even make any assumptions on whether or not SEGA owns her.

From what I've seen in the copyright, it would appear that SEGA DOES have the rights to use Septum as they wish for future Puyo games.

Nah, ain't nothin' bout it.

I assume you are reffering to SEGA being mentioned on the cover of the game and honestly, that on it's own doesn't really say anything.

You see by that point SEGA already owned most of the franchise, Compile was essentially borrowing it for their last years, with SEGA holding so much ownership that any game that featured characters that appear in Puyo Puyo needed to credit SEGA for said characters, among those games is also Saturn Madou and we all know that SEGA doesn't own Madou itself or anything that's exclusive it, so them being credited isn't an indicator for anything.

Ah, I see. Honestly, it's times like this where I wish we western fans could talk to the Puyo dev team and ask them questions like:

Is Septum, Behemoth Woman, Hanzo, etc. owned by you guys at SEGA?

Is Succubus from Quest the same character as the one from Compile?

When is the next mainline game?

Is a Puyo anime in the cards? Like, at all?

And so on.

On the subject of Madou characters, it's a very safe bet that SEGA has no rights for them, you have to consider that Madou and Puyo are still considered seperate lincenses and SEGA merely owns everything Puyo related that also happened to appear in Madou, everything that's exclusive to MM is out of their reach.

And to be honest even if there was a way to consult the dev team I feel like they would likely have too tight a leash on them on what they can talk about, to really be able to give any answers to future projects or copyright.

Oh, is THAT how that whole deal worked??? Honestly, I always just thought the deal was as simple as "Anyone and everyone who has appeared at least ONCE in a Madou game (WITHOUT having appeared in a Puyo game) PRIOR to SEGA gaining FULL (development) rights to the series in 2001, still has a shot at appearing in a Puyo game from 2001 and onward."

........Kind of wishing my thoughts above were how the rights REALLY would be handled now. At least with that, we'd have Camus, Lala, Septum, Fudoshi, Count, etc. added to the series by now.

And to be honest even if there was a way to consult the dev team I feel like they would likely have too tight a leash on them on what they can talk about, to really be able to give any answers to future projects or copyright.

*sigh* Yeah, I guess you do have a point there. This beng said though, I wish we get SOME kind of Q&A out of them one day.

Anyways, two things.

1) I have a pic here I figured you'd like. Personally, I found it pretty adorable.
C_4dOSEVoAQ-qvC.jpg:large

2) (And I won't lie, this is sort of a question I've asked quite a while back, but considering the (more or less) successful hit PPT became over here in the West, I'd like your opinion on it again.) Do you think SEGA will ever consider the prospect of a Puyo anime? If SEGA were to ever have a Puyo Q&A which EVERYONE (not limited to just Japan) could ask questions, this would be one of my first questions, honestly.

On a fairly unrelated note, Draco has kinda got me wondering... If a dragon/human hybrid woman were to get pregnant, would she lay an egg or just give birth regularly?

I...have no idea on that one, BooDestroyer. Personally, I prefer not to think of such things.

And it is good to see that PPT seemingly did well in the West (moreso on the Switch than on the PS4, it seems). As for a potential Puyo Puyo anime, while they can use any art style they please, even the current character designs can lend themselves to real fluid animation.

Could the limited animation of the games work? Maybe. But I truly do feel like it'd be better off with fluid and expressive animation that obviously shows a lot of care put into it. Pipe dream, maybe, but still.

As for who'd dub it? Whoever it is, I'd personally want them to bring back as much of the cast from PPT as possible. Some of those voices seem to be growing on me.

And yeah, Madou Monogatari and Puyo Puyo are separate licenses. Remember Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God? Yeah, that's part of the Madou Monogatari series, and features none of the original characters for legal reasons. At least some of the cast are expies of the originals, for better or worse.

That fanart of Sig is very nice, and I really do appreciate some of the littler touches, like Sig wearing a T-shirt that says "Primp" on it.

Believe or not, but that question of yours about Draco actually HAS been on my mind at least once. Heck, forget Draco giving birth...Honestly, the one thing I've wondered more than your question is...just WHO exactly are Draco's parents? I mean, a half-human/dragon hybrid isn't exactly common...

Honestly, I feel like the series' current artstyle (Fever and onward) would lend itself to some pretty cartoony slapstick animation, if they wanted to go that route. Otherwise, I'd much rather they went with the animation used in Puyo Puyo~n's intro if nothing else.

Oh God, YES. Honesty, aside from a few characters needing some work on their voices, namely Schezo, Witch, Feli, and Rei, I'd want the entire English voice cast of PPT to reprise their roles.

Oh, I see. As I've said yesterday, it kind of disappoints me how because of this, the chances of us seeing the likes of Camus, Lala, Septum, Fudoshi, Count, the Phantom God and its Gem Guardians, Wish, Wizard, Dark Matter, etc. in a Puyo game are slim to none now.

That fanart of Sig is very nice, and I really do appreciate some of the littler touches, like Sig wearing a T-shirt that says "Primp" on it.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty nice too. Honestly, I have to admit that Sig actually looks pretty adorable in all those sport outfits, mostly the baseball one. Also, REALLY cute touch of having Amitie, Raffine, and Lidelle 'squeeing' over Sig like this.

Is anyone here a fan of the way Professor Accord was handled in this dub we got?

Honestly? I like it. If nothing else, that's almost (if not EXACTLY) how I figured Ms. Accord would sound in English. I mean, I could have taken her English Fever voice as well, personally. I feel like both voices do her justice, with her English Fever voice highlighting her overall kindness and warmth towards her students and people in general, and her English PPT voice highlighting her kindness, as well as her....eccentric side.

Speaking of which, I ave another piece of fanart I'd like to post. From what I can gather, Ringo gives Ecolo a flower, in celebration of Mother's Day. Ecolo realizes he doesn't know what Mother's Day is, and goes to Ms. Accord for more info. After realizing he doesn't have a mom to speak of, Ms. Accord agrees to be his mom for Mother's Day.

I could see SEGA trying more things in terms of other media and merchandising, if they feel that the international profit makes it worth it, I'm surprised that there is stil so much they haven't tried at all even just for Japan and that includes an anime.

Same, I love the lighthearted tone of her voice and delivery and how it's nice, but also has an underlying quirkyness to it.

HOW CAN A SUGAR RUSH DRIVEN SPACE BLOB BE SO ADORABLE!?

On the subject of fanart this one brought me some ideas:
BxQzttLCcAAR9EH.jpg

Considering Ringo's sheer phobia towards everything ghost related it's surprising that we still have yet to see her ever react to Sig's soul, whenever it shows itself and I can't help but feel like that's a missed opportunity for interesting moments.
