Seems Wario is more popular in Japan than we thought...

Nintendo Dream did a 'favourite characters' survey, and he outranked Zelda, Sonic and Eevee. Yeah, that doesn't put him on par with say, Link or Pikachu, and the likes of Mario and Kirby are still far in the lead here, but it's pretty good for a character who isn't 'cute' in any way whatsoever:

I think it's actually because WarioWare is really popular in Japan. More popular than Wario Land, even.

I agree. I think Wario Land is more significant than Wario Ware too. Don't get me wrong, I love Wario Ware, but when I think of Wario, I think of the goofy greedy, smelly, strong armed antagonist featured in Mario Land and Wario Land.
