Should Wario be playable in a Mario Platformer title again...?

We all know about Wario's roots and whatnot but aside from that the first 2 games in the Wario Land franchise arguably share more in common with the original Mario formula in terms of gameplay mechanics such as the question blocks and power up system, The last main Mario game I recall the big guy being playable was SM64DS. Sure he's in spinoffs but I think he should appear in a main series game again.

Why do I think he should appear again? Well, aside from his abilities in Wario Land being unique to him, I really think he was a missed opportunity with NSMB2, which would have made the game much more replayable IMO, at least to me... Plus it'd be an excuse to bring back Wario's old hat powers I guess.

What do you all think though? If we aren't getting a main Wario Land I'd at the very least want this to happen. Listen to me, dammit, Nintendo.

I'm not too suuuure, mainly since the latest Mario platformers have little to no soul at all. I love Peach and I love her being playable but I don't feel it's an achievement given the games involved, ykno, not to mention it didn't do shit for her character like bringing back Super Princess Peach or something like that... Wario would feel kinda like the same if he were to be added. Cool addition but kinda meaningless, I'd say.

I'm still waitin for a proper "Super Mario 3D Land"

Yes. Absolutely he should.

The fan game Super Mario Bros. and the Midas Machine does a great job at including a playable Wario with a full-blown Wario Land moveset and powerups, while still remaining a traditional Mario game. It proves that it can totally be done. There's no reason for Nintendo not to do it. None at all.

But of course, these days Mario has become so homogenized and boring that something like this seems like fanfiction. God forbid the game include things besides generic toads, koopalings and goombas in generic settings like grass land, desert land, etc.

Even the RPGs are becoming like this, and it's very troubling.

I'd like to see that... but like everybody here is saying, Mario games are quickly becoming stale.

Personally I think that this is how it went: Nintendo used to take risks with Mario. Mario 3 added all kinds of new enemies and concepts, like the flying ships, Chain Chomps, Koopalings, and so on. World had whole bunch of enemies and hidden keys, even a whole different overworld to traverse other than the Mushroom Kingdom. 64 speaks for itself and Sunshine was a whooooole different ballgame than anything that we've ever seen from Mario.

But then came the Wii. The Wii basically skyrocketed Nintendo back on top of the gaming scene with it's excellent sales. Suddenly, EVERYBODY wanted to have motion control. Kinect and Playstation Move show this.

So as Nintendo soaked in their liquid gold bathtubs, they became complacent. Why should they have to give it their all? They were on top of the world. Obviously this wasn't always the case. Mario Galaxy was great, after all. But that was a launch title. You all know what I'm talking about. New Super Mario Bros. It sold like crack, and Nintendo saw that and said "Yeah, THAT'S what they want. Let's just do that over and over and over again."

Then came the Wii U and Nintendo just assuming it would sell well because "Wii" was in the title. How'd that work for you, fellas?

As a result, we got some of the best titles we've seen in a while to try and make up for the...launch titles.

But instead of making Mario more interesting and trying new things, I think the NSMB trope of keeping everything in a familiar repeating formula has bled into every aspect of Mario and it's spin-offs, from Paper Mario to the 3-D games. It's so one-note. Even Wario has been affected, having his identity consumed by WarioWare almost entirely. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE WarioWare, but I don't see why both of Wario's series can't co-exist.

I'd like to coin a term, if you don't mind.

"Mario-ization"
Verb.
1. The forcing of the typical Mario formula (i.e. Koopas, Koopalings, Goombas, Bowser kidnaps Peach, 8 Worlds, Grass, Desert, Water, Jungle, so on and so forth.) on a Mario game or spin-off series that previously had differing elements implemented into it.)
Example: Paper Mario: Color Splash.

Maybe if we popularize this term, Nintendo will find it while looking for more internet memes for the next Paper Mario game.

So, as a final answer, not right now. That just risks Wario falling into the Mario-ization business, and the idea of that bleeding into Wario Land frightens me tremendously.

I feel as though at this point mario is mario and wario is wario.
That being said they should do it for the sake of giving wario recognition. Perhaps have him and waluigi rather than a yellow toad and a blue toad. As to why they would help with peach? I don't know perhaps she's an ultra rich princess and they need to get in good to mooch off of her.

WHY do people keep comparing Wario Land to that New Super Mario 2 game? It's got nothing to do with treasure hunting or exploration. It just shoves buttloads of generic coins down your throat as you run from point A to point B. That's not Wario Land. There's zero incentive to collect it!

The gold and treasures of Wario Land actually had substance and value.

Unlike this, which is more like something a little kid would make in a Mario level editor --- because endless coins littering the stage is a novelty at that age...

This is how I feel. While I do think Wario is in need of more meaningful exposure right now, I would like for him to remain distinct. It's also the reason I have reservations for Waluigi appearing in a Land or Ware title(though another kind of Wario game I could see as working).

When NSMB first came to Wii, it just seemed like the perfect choice to have Wario there instead of two toads. Never understood why they didn't include him.
If they ever make some kinda 3D World 2, Wario would probably be best suited for that type of game.

NSMB2 on it's own was a mediocre experience but I think having Wario as an unlockable would have motivated me more than just a title screen change, especially if I got to USE his moves from Wario Land like the Shoulder Bash and his old power up pots. And honestly, I find Wario's gameplay so fun to use it would have added more replayability, I love just going around smashing things.

For future reference, in case the link breaks (it's an old article).
@ShyGuyXXL will love this, if he hasn't already seen it.

This is the stupidest excuse I've ever seen. You know what attack he WOULD need? THIS is the move people remember him for, It's not that hard:

Also everyone having to play the same? Remember The Lost Levels? Luigi had different physics than Mario for gods sake, and even the American SMB2 was unique for it's different character abilities, Otherwise there is not much reason to play as other characters as they'd be simple reskins. Gee, No wonder he hates originality. I think I see why Gunpei Yokoi and R&D1 let Wario take over the Mario Land series - They were so fed up with his creative restrictions.

Considering he was in SM64DS, I'd say he probably would be in for cake or treasure. I guess who wouldn't?

The funniest (and stupidest) thing about Miyamoto's 'explanation' is the fact that Wario Land: Shake Dimension/Shake It! features absolutely NO fart attacks, and it was released months after Smash Bros Brawl came out and introduced that fart move. This interview was done over a year later in 2009, so either Miyamoto completely ignored Shake Dimension and just assumes it's full of farts, or he actually thinks Smash Bros is more relevant to Wario than his own platforming games/series.

All these demented "explanations" just make me want to smack the man's head with a newspaper!

...HEY let's look at the bright side! In a way the characters weren't added because they got unique features and they didn't wanna strip them down of these for the sake of a silly generic title uwu

...replace "fart attack" for "shoulder barge" and this is actually uh, good. Yeah.

Godammit Miyamoto I respect you but you're fuckin up big time.
