The Mario RPG thread

Speeking of the opening cinematic, I am a little bit nitpicky in saying this, but I dislike the fact that they changed the screen at the bottom of the text to speach bubbles.
I know that, yes, that fact in the origional was purely due to the screen size limitations, but with the whole game being a movie, it made for a better movie opening, with actual movie subtitles.

Other things I don't like as much is how the music extends further, instead of suddenly dropping.
Such as the castle explosion. The sudden music stop, plus the much quicker explosion animation, made it a lot more comedic, and it was extra funny because you didn't have time to prepare for it, so it got you by surpirce.

Now as far as removing female toads... What will happen with that scene at Little Fungitown, where a toad is hiding from a girl on a Mushroom platform, because she can't jump onto it, and he says "that girl scares me"?
Are we just completly getting rid of that little moment?

Wait--

Removing female toads....?

Is this true?

Ever since Treasure Tracker, Nintendo went with a "toads don't have genders policy".

Now, there was a femlae toad in Toadtown Square, but she's been replaced with a generic pink toad.
Which makes less sense, and just less... You had a girl (perhaps fangirl) complimenting Mario's amazing jump, and now just a generic toad.

That is complete insanity. For what purpose...? What about Toadette? And all the previously seen female toads (mostly in the RPGs)?

I need a link or something, this is just ludicrous

I'd say it's more Nintendo's dislike for derivative designs of existing characters unless it's just them wearing a hat or something. (Streamlining)

Wasn't the whole "Toads are genderless" thing a badly written article that got spread around?

I think what they were trying to say was "We never really thought about the Toads' genders." and not "We thought of the Toads as not having genders."

And yes, in the "modernized" Mario canon the only female Toad is Toadette.

That's what I recall to, but either way that interview is full of questionable statements as is, like Toads supposedly not being mushroom people all of the sudden.

Either way I'm holding up hope that Little Fungitown will be better about the Toads, since there is quite a lot of NPC dialogue there that only works with female/kid Toads, unless they re-write it or make things awkward by using the generic designs for everything.

So they're like the Smurfs now? They've only got the sole female Smurfette....shit, even the naming pattern is the same...Smurf/Toad Smurfette/Toadette

For the record, I hate it.

I just hope these priceless expressions make it through intact.

I was worried they would replace Toadtown Square music with Peach's Castle theme from Dream Team / Paper Jam, you know, reusing content. Thankfully, they didn't. Makes sense. Toadtown =/= Peach's Castle.

However, they might still reuse the Driftwood Shore theme for Oho Oasis, with it already being a remake, after all.
It's a good remix, but I still hope we can get a new one.

Yeah, they're not gonna replace the music with that from other games. That'd lose much of a point of a remake.

That said, I do wonder how they'll update the Joke's End theme so it doesn't sound annoying as hell. Or whether they'll do something about Beanbean Castle Town constantly being stuck with the depressing 'misfortune' music for the rest of the game:

That and I'm very curious to see how this is going to make the transition:

My guess is that it's going to be made longer, given how it being a really short and repetetive loop is the biggest problem people have with the song and if the battle theme can get extended then I'd be very surprised if Joke's End did't get the same treatment.

Well, one thing's for sure: Once the remake's sprites have been ripped and uploaded I'll "fix" all the animations I don't think do their original counterparts justice.

EVEN IF IT TAKES ME FOREVER!!!

That isn't even true. The town gets built back up, right?
Also, you are the only one I've ever seen expressing dislike of Joke's End's theme. I've heard it get lots of praise.

Yes, but then right before the final "chapter" it gets destroyed again, leaving you with the tragic music for the rest of the game.

It's not a bad composition and it's good at expressing the kind of atmosphere Joke's End is supposed to have, it's just that it's a pretty long dungeon and the theme is ultimately pretty repetitive, which some people might not wanna have to endure for so long.
Personally it never bothered me THAT much...
Like someone in a comment section once said "This theme definitely nails the "You're slowly turning insane" theme down.".
...and sometimes I like a bit of suffering if it puts me in the right mood for the game.
The place itself is cold, dull, bleak, lifeless, and sad...
...so in a way the theme fits perfectly.

It's like the 2 General White sidequests in Paper Mario 2. They are torturous... but in a good way. :STongue:

Exactly. It perfectly sets the atmosphere. To me, that theme alone makes that section of the game a more influential part of the story.

Also, yeah, you're right, I didn't realise that. I do all side quests as they come up, so after that I head into Bowser's Castle quite quickly and finish the game, so 'the rest of the game' is hardly anything for me. d:)
