Was Waluigi supposed to be a darker character at first?

blanche

Wario Fan Supreme
I noticed in Mario Tennis 64 he had a deeper voice than Wario's and looked more villain like and "evil". He also had sharp teeth with a perpetual frown (or with the occasional villainous grin) and was more serious save aside his arrogance and temperamental bouts of anger. (that never changed, was actually played up in a more cartoony way, though)

His theme music in MP3 sounded more sinister and melancholic while his newer theme music is more like the crazy silly Waluigi we know today. :)

Other people noticed this too but I don't see this being talked about often.

He acts more wackier now and looks more silly. I don't mind though. I just thought it might warrant an interesting discussion. ^^

I wonder why they decided to change it (or expand upon his character in a different direction)

Those are interesting observations. This tidbit also hint toward Waluigi being originaly envisioned as more of a serious character (well as serious as fucking Waluigi can be, anyway lol).

As a comic relief character, he is often given comical and nonsensical animations, and in Wario's Warehouse, Wario often portrays Waluigi as extremely stupid, often making idiotic and foolish decisions. This, however, conflicts with the Japanese Mario Tennis 64 website, which claims that Waluigi is smarter than Wario, preferring to use his brains rather than brawn

Ultimately, I think making him "weird" and "random" was the right direction to take his character, though.

Interesting. I'm not complaining but I wonder what it would be like. Maybe not fitting for Mario. Probably more suitable for Mario RPG but who knows,.

Oh, he was most definitely intended to be a more serious villain when he was conceived. See those purple flashes in his eyes when he scores in Mario Tennis 64? That's some evil-looking stuff. Starting with the GameCube games, though, he started being depicted as more silly. And he's so much better now that he is, in my opinion. Plus, his higher, more nasally voice definitely suits him better than having a deeper voice than Wario.

I think they wanted to make Waluigi a bad guy and they turned him into not-bad but not-good character like Wario, if you use the Mario spin-offs as a timeline.

That was interesting. I wonder how it would of been if it turned out that way. Maybe they can introduce that idea to the RPGs or something. Why do you think his newer self is better? I agree simply because it's funny and more suiting for Mario, but then I always have a fondness for weird villain characters lol.

"During the events of Mario Power Tennis, Waluigi was at the receiving end of one power shot too many, giving him permanent brain damage..."

Me and my boyfriend always joked that Wario hit him too much and punched him in the throat.. that's why he acts more silly and has a higher voice now

I mean, Dr. Eggman is my favorite video game character of all (please don't throw garlic at me, I still love Wario), so a silly villain is something I'm already quite fond of. Overall, I think Waluigi's just a lot more interesting with his wacky, over-the-top personality and antics. And his animations. So flamboyant.

I never realized how much I want Waluigi in an RPG until now. Then again, I just want him in any non-sports and non-party game.

Dr. Robotnik/Eggman is awesome, but I always though that he was Sega's response to Mario, they even had an idea to create a Bad Mario in Alex Kidd before Wario existed:
Don't believe me? Well look at these coincidences:

But that was before when I knew that Eggman was based on Teddy Roosevelt.

So this is how Waluigi's mind works?

I imagine Waluigi to be a somewhat demented, flamboyant, expressive character.

It's interesting how the fans push the narrative he's more tormented or "good" than he seems.
Tormented by his personal demons and mental issues, probably. :D

I don't think he was that serious except in Mario Tennis. I mean, Mario Party 3's representation of him was pretty comical:

That was only the late N64 era...

Well, it's Mario. I said it was more serious but not serious like SatAM Robotnik.

Well, given that normal Mario can often be a lot more serious, I'm not sure Waluigi would count for 'dark' by any standard.

This is dark:

Maybe also the Luigi's Mansion games (which Waluigi could be interesting in in the future):
