I thought they were bats too.. I looked up "Arab Bat" (since they mainly appear in Arabian Nights) and found this which I guess looks somewhat similar with its big nose.

The I always theorized that the levels Wario enters aren't even real. That they are magically shaped and created as soon as Wario enters them. Think of it like when Luke entered that area on Dagobah and had to fight Darth Vader that wasn't really... -

Maybe they are shapeshifters who take the form of the person they're trying to kill. Maybe the whole game takes place inside Wario's head and he's projecting himself onto his foes because deep inside he knows he's bad.... How's that for a game...

The latter. You can't rotate sprites without stuff like mode 7 on the SNES, and that would affect everything else in the level. So dynamic sprites often just had a ton of frames. -
