What's a series you like/love but you don't want to admit it?

TB100

What you see is what you get, just a guy...
Okay let's be honest here, we all have that one series that we really like, but we do not want to admit it to liking, whatever it's to avoid being made fun of by other people or some other reason. But now it's time to come out and admit those secret likes, so what is something you hold dearly to your heart, but you don't wanna admit that? Here's my answer.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Now Thomas has been a giant part of my childhood, I watched the VHS all the time when I was little, and I made a habit of collecting these.

I actually still have most of my collection, and it's pretty giant as well.
Now while I'm not into Thomas like I did when I was little, I still love the tank engine,
I still grab any new Engine I see, and I even still watch the series every now and then. (Only The Classic Series and the current seasons though, because S8-16 sucked bad.) Hell I even have the original books now, (via a compilation book.) now I don't usually talk about this, (except to my closest friends and family,) because Thomas tends to have a reputation of being a kiddy show in America, and it's hard to like something kiddy without being made fun of unless it's explicitly for nostalgic reasons. (He seems to be loved more in Britain though, for obvious reasons.) But despite my age, Thomas is still a big part of my childhood, and even when I'm 40yo, i'll still love the little blue tank engine despite it.

So now I want to ask you, what is something you hold dear to you're heart, but you don't want to admit that?

Comment away. (And it can be for any series, whatever it's a games, movies or books.)

Pro wrestling.

Everyone here knows that I enjoy it, but irl its very much a secret that like two people know about, haha : p

Don't care that most people know it but Doom, I just don't tell my duper christian parents, They caught me playing the original doom years ago and i got beat for "Succumbing to the anti christ". My friends, siblings and, you guys know but i can't tell my parents so i hope that counts.

Why are you ashamed of being a Garfield fan? Garfield is great : p One of the best comics ever, haha.

Unless its that ugly new CGI cartoon, if it is then yeah, shame on you D : <
(just teasing you btw : p)

And ummmmmm I dont really have any video games Im ashamed to like, are there games that are embarrassing to be a fan of? I generally feel a bit weird when I buy a violent game though, like if I buy turok or something, or tell someone I like it, I generally have a bit of a weird feeling.
But pffft I dont care I think its great, haha.

Garfield has kinda become stagnated at some point during the 90s to where it's become a bit predictable and stale for a lot of people; That combined with the two live action/chi movies has kind of made Garfield a bit of a Joke in the newspaper comic industry in the same way Sonic is considered a Joke in the gaming industry.
Maybe that's not his reasoning at all, but it is a explanation as to why it's pretty hard to be a fan of Garfield these days. (Hey dude, if you like Garfield, then that's really cool, I love the cat too.)

as a christian, i find that frankly ridiculous, along with the whole"violent video games make people violent" thing.
100 mario challenge for super mario maker is proof that you dont need violent gory games to be a sadistic bloodthirsty maniac.

i liked this show and i kinda liked gravity falls (i havent gone too deep yet), even though its clearly made with people half my age in mind, if not as the intended audience.
oh well, i can just drag myself to my niece's house (or her to my house) so i have a viable excuse to watch it aside from "im into stuff like this :p"

I have never heard of Star vs The Forces of Evil ever but thats a neat picture there so now I kinda wanna check it out : p

And haha, Ive never really felt ashamed for liking cartoons as an adult, like everyone my age generally does to some extent, and like even my mom whos in her 50s watches cartoons, we actually watched Gravity Falls together, so dunno, feels normal for an adult to like cartoons to me : p

I think The Amazing World of Gumball is awesome. It's visually impressive, the aesthetic is so unique and pleasant to look at. Not to mention the writing is witty and sharp, which is pretty rare for kid's shows these days.

And it's worth noting I absolutely adore Carrie Krueger, the punk rock ghost. She's one of my favorite characters ever.

Needless to say this isn't something I can really bring up in certain social situations...

Yes, though I'm being semi-serious in that there isn't really much I'm embarrassed to freely admit to liking. Maybe when I was younger...

I understand that actually, I really tried to think of things Im embarrassed to like and cant think of anything, haha.

I dunno, maybe Star Wars, cuz people either dont care for it at all, or are so hardcore about it that talking with them leads to them going on about all their extended universe knowledge to show you how much of a fan they are, that you can just have a casual conversation with anyone about it ever : p Maybe not embarrassed but its generally something I keep to myself I guess : p

I used to have fears in regards to people finding out certain things that like years ago, not so much nowadays.

It's not even because I'm particulary confident, but rather because I find it hard to take the mockery of people who would make fun of me over my interests seriously, just because of how infantile that attitude is.

(Insulting others over their interests I mean)

How could anyone be ashamed of loving Thomas the Tank Engine? I used to collect all the old models and sets. Do they still use hand-painted metal? Or have they switched to cheap, crappy plastic?
When I was in grade 4 my elderly teacher brought in her son's big collection of classic models, and we compared which ones we had. There's nothing remotely weird about collecting those iconic figures, no matter how old you are. Seriously, there's plenty of old men running hobby shops who LOVE this stuff!

By the way, I truly hate the CGI modernising of classic franchises. You just can't "update" the classic 80's series narrated by Ringo Starr, with its hand-made sets and motionless figures. It captures the imagination with its raw, organic quality. I would sit and watch my VHS tapes endlessly as a kid. They truly inspired my creativity.

I can't agree more, There's just a certain magic with the older seasons that the newer seasons just don't capture
Now I'll say this right now before going into a wall of text, the modern CGI incarnation is not bad (In fact, it's been pretty great as of S17) and compared to a lot of computer modernizations like it, it still at least kept faithful to the original style and characters, (Unlike poor Bob the Builder) But I can't deny that there was definitely something lost in the process. which is like you said, that "raw organic quality". the fact that Britt and her team took hours on end, painstakingly recreating the original awdry characters and locations is very extremely impressive and is sadly not something that you can see nowadays.

And the fact that these models are actually real and actually did the stuff you see on television only makes it more magical and combined with the fact that the characters themselves were actually based off of real life steam engines just gives the classic series a certain and unique magic that no amount of great CGI can capture.
And combine the above with a fucking legendary soundtrack by Campbell and O'Donnell (Seriously it has no right to be as good as it is.)

and the storybook format with narration by Ringo Star and George Carlin and you have a very magical TV show that's unlike really anything else.

One that can truly capture the imagination.

Sorry for the wall of text BTW

And yes they still make hand painted metal models.
But they're in a much different form then they use to be and plastic has become a much bigger thing now compared to the days of old. but yes, they still do them at least.

I really like me some Spongebob though i hardly talk about in recent years since around season 6 or so it was widely considered to have turned to crap. Though now i'm willing to be more open about it since ever since Sponge out of Water people like it again due to good ol' Hillenburg returning.
