How is Wario Land 3 compared to the other games?

I wrote about Shake Dimension a few years ago here and here. As I said at the time, the comments are a bit rough, but they certainly capture my impression of the game. In brief: Wario reverts back to Wario Land 1 mechanics Most of the interesting interactions come from the motion controls Most...

How is Wario Land 3 compared to the other games?

Would have to be Shake Dimension. Cool visuals, but really lame gameplay.

    Shantae Thread

Well, I thought I gave a pretty clear explanation with examples (as opposed to just saying someone's argument is wrong). I also beat this game as well as the other games I mentioned. SMB Mario has momentum, acceleration, variation in jump height, mid-air control, skids, etc. As such the core...

How is Wario Land 3 compared to the other games?

Wario Land 3 is pretty interesting as a Metroid/Wario hybrid, but unfortunately the structure of the game (dense hub words which must be repeated with some slight variations) leads to a lot of filler. I much prefer the refined gameplay pulp of Wario Land 4. Still, if you're enough of a Wario fan...

    Shantae Thread

I recently completed Shantae and the Pirate's Curse after hearing positive things about the series over the past few years. I can't say I really enjoyed it, though. The platforming and attacking mechanics are quite static (i.e. lack dynamic properties like momentum, acceleration, etc.) and don't...

Poll Are you Nintendo-Only Player or do you play with other consoles too?

I've always played a mix of consoles. I have quite a significant backlog of games, so I still tend to jump between either Nintendo, Playstation, or PC. However, after the PS3 I kinda fell out of love with the big hollywood style games of the AAA industry, so I pretty much limit myself to...

Upcoming Game Wario Land 1 Unofficial Remake

^ Sounds good. I'd love to try my hand at a Wario Land level maker. Would be good to put all of my study to use. :D

Upcoming Game Wario Land 1 Unofficial Remake

Looks great. I think it looks better when the zoom level is the same as the original. The white space created by the zoomed out view isn't really necessary. Keep us updated. :)

What music are you listening to right now?

I've been listening to some older Jamiroquai stuff in preparation for the new album coming at the end of the month.

    Game music you like

I love all the music from Final Fantasy Tactics. It's simply gorgeous stuff.

Actually, I wrote the book from 2011-2013. I was encouraged to join by CM30, and I love talking about WL, of course. (Not sure if I'm replying to earlier messages...@_@)

How could Nintendo 'revive' the Wario Land series?

Nintendo's developers are creatives. Game development within their core studios is driven by new and "fun" gameplay ideas more so than anything else. If they have a good idea which can stand by itself, then they'll look for an existing IP to act as the contextual wrapper to help ease the players...

    Your first Wario Game?

I'm from Adelaide. For some reason I just couldn't find SML2, or when I did it was out of my price range. I'm working on Adventures in Games Analysis, a compilation of game design essays. It's been kicking around for a while, but I'm finally getting near the end. Should hopefully be out this...

    Level Progression in Wario Land

Good observations. I wrote a little about it here and went in depth on the implications of this design on game difficultly/engagement in the "Designing for Freedom Within Linearity" chapter in my book. As you say, each game has a different take on freer forms of level progression and...

    Your first Wario Game?

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 My first Game Boy game was Super Mario Land, which came as a pack-in. I remember really wanting to play Super Mario Land 2, especially after seeing its awesome box art in catalogues. Unfortunately, I had a hard time finding SML2 in my area. Eventually I picked up...

Poll Should Wayforward make a Wario Land Game?

I've played a number of WayForward titles and I've found that they explore the potential in their game designs quite well. However, all the games I've played (A Boy and His Blob, Lit, Aliens Infestation, etc.) lack any strong dynamic elements at the core of the gameplay and therefore tend to...

An interesting game design video about Wario Land 4...

The video is well produced, but he spends most of it summarising the game more broadly instead of presenting examples which support his thesis. He also doesn't explain what he means by "relaxed". By the end of the video he just says that everything he likes about the game makes him feel...

Should Nintendo make a 3DS VC remake of VB Wario Land

I agree with the other commenters. I think such a title has already missed the boat if it were to be produced for the 3DS. The idea of the Virtual Boy on the 3DS Virtual Console is too perfect a fit, especially given the 3DS's 3D visuals and its potential to emulate the Virtual Boy. Oh well.
