So I was watching a youtuber's top ten lists of Cartoon Networks cartoons, and I saw that he did one for Nickelodeon too, and decided to watch it too. It was kinda cool seeing them compared to each other like that, and really got me excited by the idea of talking about them : p I kinda feel like I have a better opinion about the two side by side now, and thought it would be cool to discuss : p

Soooooo, what do you like better? Nick or CN? Im sure my answer is obvious : p

I think Id definitely pick Nickelodeon. And that doesnt mean I hate Cartoon Network. I loved several of CN's shows, some of the obvious being Ed Edd and Eddy and Courage the Cowardly Dog. Those are some of the best cartoons ever.

But I feel that Nick had cartoons more aimed at like relatable characters and like things that people deal with in real life. I dont mean like references to pop culture or anything. Is hard to explain but like, I think the shows on Nick are more character driven, where CN had shows that were more based on the world the characters live in with a focus on the far out world around them. And I think that Nick had cartoons that were more deep and dealt with more like.... emotionally driven storyline and junk. Not always of course : p I dont think youd find anything like that on Spongebob or anything : p But that was one thing I always really liked with shows on Nick, like with Hey Arnold or Danny Phantom or What Ever Happened to Robot Jones, I always liked watching the characters on that show who like grew close with each other and junk.

But yeah, which one did you like better and why? : p

Nickelodeon also had some really neat shows that often get over shadowed for whatever reason such as Angry Beavers, then there was Oh Yeah Cartoons!(which was the birth place for Fairly Odd Parents, Chalk Zone, etc). Growing up majority of my memories come from Nickelodeon but CN also had really a high impact as well when it started ti air. So it really depends, I have a lot of memories with Nickelodeon but I ended up liking a lot of CN shows as well stuff like Foster's Home especially, though I can say currently I watch just whatever is interesting like Star Butterfly, the TMNT teen nick show, and Miraculous Ladybug.

When it came with more deeply concerned stuff definitely do feel a lot of Nick shows tackled that. A big example I remember from Hey Arnold. It was a Christmas episode and Mr. Hyunh was reminiscing about how he gave his daughter away for her to have a better life due to the Vietnam war. Back than it was really hard for me to understand it, it wasn't until now that I got it. Think might have to go with Nick on this as well for me, or well past Nick.

Haha, actually that youtuber totally reminded me of Chalk Zone! I had totally forgotten about it, but I did like that show back when it was on, was a fan : p And I also loved Angry Beavers, you should watch their Halloween movie, haha it was hilarious : p

And I loved that Hey Arnold episode too, I really liked watching Helga lose the gift she really wanted in order to help Arnold and his gift to Mr. Hyunh. It was way awesome. Hey Arnold was really good with that kinda stuff, it was good at being both a cartoon and also taking a more emotional turn too. Its definitely a favorite of mine.s

Something to keep in mind with both networks is concerning cartoons, they haven't been making them for a remarkably long time.

Nickelodeon started around 1988-1989, Cartoon Network wasn't long after. Both studios contracted different styles of animators and their parent companies, Viacom and Time Warner, really dictate what kind of programming the stations have to begin with. Generally speaking TW has more family friendly stuff, whereas Viacom has MTV and a lot of the other more liberal networks.

Both companies hired new content creators and it really is a subjective thing. Do you prefer a story that adults relate to spun in a way that appeals to kids (Rocko)? Do you like a primarily kid aimed show with some adult undertones thrown in (Ed x3)? Both are aiming to do something very similar but are approached differently. Nick has always jived with me better personally, and I feel back in their golden age of animation they really played with more diverse ideas and took more liberties than CN ever did. CN does have the upper hand on different animation styles, but I always found myself lamenting watching Cow and Chicken because a Nick cartoon I would have rather watched wasn't on.

Cartoon Network had Dexter, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuffs, Eds, etc...so I gotta go with them. That stuff was awesome.

However, Nick had Rocko's Modern Life, which is to this day one of my all-time favorite shows.

I think both were great in the mid to late 90s to early 2000s. Nowdays I think Cartoon Network has put out a couple really good shows as of late while for Nick the only recent thing I can say that looks interesting is The Loud House.

Let me try to recall my favorite shows from each channel...

CN: Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, Codename: Kids Next Door, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi(sort of).

Nick: Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, All That, Hey Arnold, CatDog, Rocket Power, The Amanda Show, Spongebob Squarepants(early), Invader Zim, Chalk Zone, Fairly Odd Parents and Jimmy Neutron.

Oh haha you liked Rocket Power, too? Am glad I wasnt the only one : p I really liked that show, but not everyone else does : p

Yeah, I've been watching some Johnny Bravo recently and that show was just hilarious. I'd say Cartoon network. Still, I did watch a lot of Nickelodeon when I was little. I stopped watching both channels since high school, though. They're translating every show into dutch, I hate that.

I had nickelodeon once, but I only really liked Spongebob. So I have to choose Cartoon Network, because of Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time, Regular Show.... So many!

While I love Nickelodeon and I have a huge respect for the company and the amount of the incredible Nicktoons they have under their belt.
I have to side with Cartoon Network due to a case of both nostalgia and the sheer amount of incredible cartoons they have.
Powerpuff Girls, Teen Titans, Ed Edd n Eddy, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, The Amazing Adventures of Gumball, Chowder (Yes I like Chowder, shoot me. XD), Dexter's Laboratory and so many more. (Combine that with Boomerang as well since I grew up with their stuff as well as Cartoon Network.) and you have a channel that has practically defined my childhood of sorts. Hell in 2012 when Cartoon Network was celebrating their 20th anniversary.
This was actually my wallpaper for nearly an entire year.

So that should say something about how much I love this network. (Despite having their shitty years and shitty shows.)
Also, Cartoon Network had Sonic Boom. So it gets points for that as well.

My teenage self would've chosen Nickelodeon (or soon to be Nicktoons) simply because I was pretty obsessed with Fairly Odd Parents at the time. It always came on just after coming home from school, haha.

Nick back in the 80's was good stuff, but now it's too kiddy. I go for CN's adult swim. I watched nick on the very first day aired which was back in 81 or 3.

Well, if it changes anything, Fairly OddParents creator Butch Hartman is also apparently working with Cartoon Network now:
