I got this in the mail earlier today, and I've been enjoying it.

That's right, Gravity Rush Remastered came in the mail today! I imported the Asian-English release, partially because I prefer hard copies, and partially because American physical copies are expensive. Why do I gotta jump through hoops to get a hard copy of the PS4 release of the original game when I can get a physical copy Gravity Rush 2 just going to Walmart? Oh well, at least I have it

It's a very enjoyable game so far. Never got to play it on the Vita, so this is a nice treat.

When I graduated last week, I got some gifts from my mother.
Among those was this keychain.
31EOmFJ.jpg

And it's kind of cool, I guess! d:) But, honestly, in my opinion, not too impressive. I might use it if I need a keychain, but I'm not too sure. I don't like how the propeller mushroom is smaller than the other power-ups, although it is a logical decision.
But there's more...
Because apparently, this keychain was given away for free with the purchase of a GBA cartridge. So, my mother had to buy a GBA game... but she didn't know which. And, of course, she didn't want to ask me either. (because seriously, I hadn't even considered the possibility of getting a game for my graduation)
But somehow, she picked what might've been the perfect cartridge.

This is so cool!!
Four Swords is only playable with 2 or more cartridges, so I can't check that out. But I've wanted to play A Link to the Past for a long time! It's a really fun game so far; I've gotten the first pendant. d:)

Awesome! What you've got there is a time-honored classic, one of the most beloved games of all time. Glad you're having fun!

Recently bought the new Fire Emblem remake, Shadows of Valentia or Echoes. It's a really nice up to date game which uses the more or less pre awakening mechanics and the inclusion of battles overhead seem a lot better to ease on down with playing the game, it reminded me of some of the hammer bro battles you would encounter on the overworld map in SMB3. Also love the complete redesign of the characters since well they are incredibly dated by today's standards.

Speaking of Japan and DK Country, I've always wondered just how popular it was over there, since the style of the game is so western/European-centric. Some people speculate it's not as widely loved, and both Donkey and Diddy are not treated as warmly in the land of the rising sun. I never jump to conclusions, but I'd like to know the story behind this price comparison for Japanese Amiibos. They're all priced the same except for Donkey and Diddy, which are notably lower...

(old post but I figured my response might still be of interest)

The first DKC did gangbusters in Japan - it was the first western-developed game to sell over one million copy and at 3 millions sold for the SNES version alone, remains the best-selling western game there. The sequels did great too - infact, DKC3 sold *better* in Japan than it did in the west. Donkey Kong 64 made it to a Famitsu poll for the "most memorable" games as recently as 2016. Look at musical uploads of the DKC soundtrack on the Japanese youtube and niconico and you'll see ton of goodwill regarding the series.

Tropical Freeze hasn't done well there and stuff like SMash Bros's snubbing of the series and Nintendo's clumsy handling of Donkey Kong after Rare's sale has given people a warped idea DKC is somehow obscure and unpopular in Japan. Nothing could be further from the truth - Japan loves Donkey Kong Country.

Cheers for the info, Glow! I'm always happy to see cultural differences not getting in the way of a good thing.

Last week, I went to the Bonami Spelcomputer Museum again last week, a museum with all sorts of video game consoles, which you can play as much as you want to. d:)
I played a lot of games and even some systems I hadn't ever played before, and it was a lot of fun as last time.
I also bought two games again!
The pictures aren't too great this time, as I took them right when I got back, and don't want to retake them now, as I like that they were taken with a different background for once. d;) (my table in the room I'm renting; I'm with my family for the weekend, so I can't take a picture there)

Astérix & Obélix, for Gameboy.
On pc this game is simply called Obelix, and I've played it quite some times. I never got very far, though, as it's very hard, even on 'Easy' mode.
I had expected the Gameboy game to be much less good, as obviously, it's Gameboy, and sacrifices have to be made to make a game work on there. But I was quite impressed! d:) The controls actually work perfectly, and the physics are completely solid too. The game isn't as hard as the original (and that while I'm playing on the Medium difficulty here), but there are some different kinds of enemies to make things more interesting, and just jumping and running to the right constantly won't get you to the end of the level alive, probably.
The game is playable in French and German, so I'm using German, as I can't really read French. d:p
One issue with it, though: the password system from the original games isn't present. This means that you have to finish the game in one run, and that while it should take around an hour to beat. So I can't really play it often, or I'll have to give up before I actually go game over. That is a bit of a shame, but it's understandable, as many old Gameboy games have neither a password nor a save system.
This game was only €3,-, by the way.

But then, after that, I found another gem in the store:
VZaFFa4.jpg

This game has been severely praised before by a classmate from secondary education, with whom I have been a lot. One time on a bus trip, he showed the game to me, and explained how it worked and how great it was.
Now that I came across it, and for only €10,-, obviously without sending fees, I decided to get it. ^.^
And it's really, really special! A very unique and innovative experience.
Something that shocked me, is the ability to interact with others, without the need to use a link cable.
Does anyone else here play the game?? Because I'd really love to try out the Wonder Mail function! d:)

Really cool, I went to that museum once and got me some old posters. I'm thinking of going there on the 24th of September.
I will definitly go to the Retro Game Convention in Zwolle on the 17th of September. I went there in februari and I was NOT dissapointed, so many sweet goods there. I even scored this beauty for only 50 euro's, which is a steal nowadays:

That sounds really good!! Not that I haven't already spent enough money in the past couple of months... but I'd at least like to see what's there!
Do you have a link to a page about the upcoming event? When I looked it up, I still found the one in February.
How does that work exactly?
I considered looking it up, but actually won't, as it might spoil the algorithms behind the system, and lead me to know things which I don't want to know.
But this is how it works, I think (I haven't had the ability to try it, as hardly anyone seems to play this game anymore). Say there's a situation where I need help from someone. I can go to a certain place in the game and state so. The game will then generate a code for me. I can put that code on the forums here. BlueJackG might see it, and decide to fire up his game again. He goes to that certain place I had to go to also, and instead of stating he needs help, states he wants to go on a rescue mission. He then gets prompted for a code. He inputs the code I put on the forums, and then... I don't know that part for sure, as I haven't ever tried. I assume Jack can do something in the game, that will require effort and items on his part. He can then 'save' me. When he does so, the game generates a new code for him, which is somehow linked to the initial code. Jack sends me the code or posts it on the forum, and when I see it, I turn on my GBA, go to that certain place again, and input the code. The game then probably generates the new code itself, and check if the both match up. If they do, it is concluded that someone did indeed save me, and I am saved.

At least I think that's how it works. That part of it, at least, as it seems like they used it in more parts. It seems like a really complex system... and I love the idea! d:D

They keep people up-to-date via FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/RetroGameConZwolle/
If you want to know more about the event, or the one I went in Februari, feel free to send me a PM. =) (So that we don't get off-topic here too much)

Sounds cool, it reminds me of those older games that had certain codes instead of saving states.

I own quite a few Asterix games, but I've never had a crack at the GB version of Asterix & Obelix. I've always really liked the SNES version. The gameplay is a bit unrefined (fighting enemies is clunky and risky), but it has some gorgeous background art throughout...

In addition to a large and really classy soundtrack, loaded with beautiful European-flavoured themes (courtesy of our good pal, Alberto Jose Gonzalez)...

Agreed. And I don't mind the unrefinedness. It just makes the game a lot harder, and often makes you die unexpectedly. However, I still like how fair it is: if I die, I might think "Oh, I didn't think I'd die there", but I will also think "Perhaps I should try this next time instead". So the more you try, the further you get, and I like that. d:) I am so experienced with platformers, that I honestly like having to figure some things out. When I was in the museum, I played two games that were very similar in spirit to this game, but more well-made: The Lion King for SNES, and Mickey's Wild Adventure for Playstation. I'd love to play more of that! :D

Anyway, I have already got something else to share here:
Z8KUxec.jpg

I bought four manuals of GBA games from retrogamefreak.com! All four of these don't have scans available on the internet yet, as far as I can tell: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is available, but I don't think the Dutch translation is. The Disney Princess manual is quite impressive, giving detailed information on every single level. The Ice Age manual isn't very interesting at all, giving you more information on the story and characters from the movie than on the game itself. The Madagascar manual is a bit in-between. The Ice Age manual is in black and white, the other three are in full colour. d:)

It's great! :) I'm working on a speedrun of it. d:)

That's nice. It's in my opinion a pretty good game actually. I've always loved how the game looks a bit like a late Gameboy Color game, and how it shows actual screenshots from the movie fairly well. It was one of the first games I have ever played, but I sold the game. The nostalgic feelings and the memories however continue to linger on.
