So this is Sakurai's excuse for removing Wario's shoulder bash...

This article was discussed in another thread. But Im gonna go ahead and quote this from the second point it makes since youre so insistent on making it the ultimate source:
In general, the U.S. interpretation of Wario focuses mostly Wario’s greed and wickedness. In the Japanese version of promotional materials, the focus is on Wario being the clumsy anti-hero

Notice how the focus here is interpretatons and promotional materials?
You got the actual game. Then there's how the countries chose to advertise it.
As in, what's in the game leaves room for both. That's what Wario SHOWS, not what they TELL you about him. its like writing 101 godammit

Hell, if that doesnt cut it for you, im gonna use this as a source, from the guys involved in Shake It's development.
Tsukawaki: After I’d played a bunch of the games in the series, I thought Wario was pretty manly. He’s so uncool that he ends up being extremely cool. Depending on the game, he can be coarse—farting and doing stuff like that, but I didn’t want to show that side of him. As much as possible, I wanted to show a macho Wario, one who is masculine and tough. I asked the animators to emphasize strongly his manly characteristics. We built up this image step-by-step during the animation process.

Japanese people reaching the American conclusion because they played the games themselves? Didnt they watch the advertising!?
...See, they played the actual games to reach a conclusion about how to make Shake It Wario, that's why he works so well. The problem with Smash Wario is that it feels like Sakurai went by the common Japan interpretation of him and didn't do any research beyond that. I don't mind him going for a different interpretation, but in a game that's supposed to celebrate the characters of Nintendo, he shouldn't be so biased by a shallow viewpoint.

wario scratch his butt when you idle on climbing a ladder in WL3
I think Shy Guy meant to say it was never in his moveset or important part of the gameplay. I'd call it an idle habit that shows his lack of manners rather than him purposefully being gross.
There's no denying it's part of his character, but it's too small in comparison to others to be the made as the main focus.

I don't actually remember that. Can we get a picture? Not trying to dismiss Wario being gross. I just don't actually remember him doing that; I might not have ever noticed.

this is important information

"If your farts cause explosions we highly recommend you see your doctor right away." So what's today's topic? Are we talking about Wario's Gross side? Because that's how I sort of saw him growing up. Being funny and gross like that.

I think it was because of brawl actually, due to the fating blasts and such. Also because he was overweight with large muscles, I saw that as weird and gross. I never took the time to sit down and think "What is Wario all about?"

Well, after playing some Wario Land and all that good stuff I (sorta) know what he's actually about. I'd take anything than that farting attack, it's so scary to get near!

Just for the record, Wario was an evil clone in a grand total of one game, final boss of Super Mario Land 2 and all. Right away on his second appearance he was established as his own character; if you lived under a rock and didn't know who Mario was, you couldn't even tell he stemmed from him. I'd blame his reduction to 'goofy evil clone' on the Mario spinoffs.

Yeah, the part in my description of how I used to see him stemmed mostly from his name and appearance based on his appearances in Mario spinoffs. Now that I know him better, he's essentially still the boorish brute that I saw him as, with maybe a bit more greed in there, but the contrast with Mario isn't as prominent in my mind. Still there, but just a footnote. But yeah, his moves in Smash being based on Mario is somewhat questionable design in my mind, since he's much more than that.

Definitely agree with this. The knock off Mario moves would've made more sense had Wario debuted in Smash 64 or maybe even Melee but by Brawl not so much anymore.

Yeah, if you've got such a large pool of possible moves to choose from, making any of them resemble Mario's moves is just lazy.

Besides, that's what we have Dr. Mario for now. He's the slow, powerful clone of Mario in the series, which is probably what Wario would have been had they went with that angle for him.

I wonder, is the development team actually involved with like promotional stuff such as commercials and manuals. Because if they aren't it's a little strange to use those as "proof" that Wario is meant to be a certain way. I can understand promotional art but that's about it.

Disagrees? So you think people with explosive farts should in fact, not see a doctor about this? lol. We got farting Wario. I also don't know what Wario-man is all about. Since when does he turn into a SuperHero? I think I saw that in smooth moves but I dunno.

Who knows what Sakurai was on when he thought this was a good idea. I like the sound of Super Armor moves, with the big shoulder rash.

Wario fell into a machine that makes things.... more super? I guess? So now he can transform into a superhero sometimes...

That's exactly what it feels like to me. Like the people who made the promotional stuff had a different interpretation of Wario than the actual developers. They thought Wario should be gross cuz... ...he's fat, I guess. >.>

I'd argue that he's not exactly fast, what with his very average ground speed and poor attack frame data (8 frame jab, why Sakurai?), as well as all of his most powerful attacks having awful, awful endlag (25 frames for f-tilt, 47 frames for the stupid backhand f-smash, 45 frames for up-smash, 41 frames for d-smash, and 39 endlag and 27 landing lag for b-air). He also doesn't generally have that strong of attacks besides some really laggy attacks that are very difficult to set up, and the Waft, which is a completely different can of worms. Having poor range also makes it easier to punish these whiffs.

Admittedly when I talk Wario I talk mostly Brawl Wario, as I'm not maining the new one cause of him getting my favorite moves downgraded(ALL 3 OF THEM! Bike, Dair and F-Smash).

As for speed: Among the highest aerial Speeds in the game. Some of the highest ground speeds(Bike Riding), fast aerial in Nair and fair. Powerful and fast kill moves in Uair(not super quick but not slow) and Waft, and Back in Brawl, Frame 9 F-Smash.

Also in brawl, glide tossing with the bike wheel allowing him to be one of the fastest on the ground. Dair being pretty damaging and having essentially no landing lag alongside a silly good airdodge allowed you either feint a dair and get behind your enemy for something else, retreating out of range or going for a Dair to something combo. Do I even have to explain how a Frame 9 F-Smash with Super Armor is both fast AND fun?
