The Mario RPG thread

I guess at this point I don't need to point out that there was no Direct, huh? ^^

See, this is why I don't like rumors. Gets your hopes up just to let you down.

...wow, that sounded less depressing in my head.

So a European release date for Paper Jam has been announced and apparently it's coming the same day as Japan is getting it, December 4.
Still no word on an American release date though...

Ninjis,King Bob-omb and the Koopalings are all confirmed to be in the game:

I really feel like I need to speak in this game's defense for a moment, for a while I was losing any excitement for the game, but watching Nintendaan's preview videos and this trailer have brought a lot of it back.

I will say that this game completely misses the point of what would make a crossover of the two Mario RPG series' appealing and the lack of any RPG characters (save for Starlow and Antasma's cameo on one of Bowser's character cards) and the more traditional environments (at least they look nice visually) really are unfortunate and I can understand those things being major dealbreakers for a lot of people.

However I will say that looking at the preview videos I mentioned before made me a whole lot more confident in the game still keeping the Mario RPG charm, the humor is still there and the sprite work is just as expressive and charming as it has always been (seriously, the animation on some of the characters like Toadette, is simply woderful), the gameplay is still solid as ever and Alphadream even finally cut down on the tutorials, in fact this might be the fastest start to any Mario RPG ever, especially since both bros start out with their hammers and get one bros attack each, before entering their first battle.

There are also still tons of references to earlier M&L games, including one that will bring a smile on the face of every Superstar Saga fan, I won't say what it is and instead recommend everyone to check out Nintendaan's preview videos on the game, you might be as pleasently suprised as I was.

I'll probably give this one a pass. The past few Mario RPGs left a bad taste in my mouth so I doubt I'll buy any more of them. Sticker Star was so bland and uninteresting, and I didn't even have the motivation to finish Dream Team. I barely remember either of the two. Paper Jam looks really standard as well. That green field area... bleh, boring. The Mario RPGs are starting to feel as homogenized and 'safe' as NSMB.

Well it definitely looks like a step backward for the series though not so much like Sticker Star. I do wish it took after the other Paper Mario more games since it takes after Sticker Star way too much from the looks of it. My biggest problem is the stale NSMB style settings but the game does at least look enjoyable. I didn't find Sticker Star all that enjoyable.

Does it even reference any Paper Mario games that AREN'T sticker star?

This very trailer shows the return of the paper airplan ability and Paper Mario can turn sideways in order to slip trough tight cracks in walls again.

Also, while it's not a reference Paper Bowser CAN talk again, a major distinguishing factor between Sticker Star and the rest of the series.

I guess that could be seen as a reference but I'm thinking about something more along the lines of a specific character being referenced, or a song being remixed (like that other one, you know the one, spoilers).
I dunno, but the paper plane and turning sideways abilities seems more like a general paper gimmick to me... maybe I'm just being too picky...

Like you said, the game misses the point of a crossover. This game could be a celebration of the two series' entire legacies but so far it just seems to celebrate sticker star.

What I would've loved to see is, instead of rescuing a ton of generic un-named recolor Toads, why aren't we saving characters that we already know and love?
Like, if they have to be Toads why not Miss Jolene, Tayce T., Zess T., Chanterelle, The Excess Express Conductor or Engineer, Heff T. , zip Toad, Russ T., Vanna T., etc.
But they don't have to be toads. There are a million other Paper Mario characters that you could find instead.

...I guess that wasn't in the budget...
...or maybe they really do wanna retcon the old Paper Mario games as non-existent or not canon...

I understand what you mean and it really is disappointing that the Paper Mario side of things is so (seemingly) lackluster, Mario & Luigi still respects it's legacy while Paper Mario almost entirely seems to take inspirations from the installment that almost everyone despises, believe me, I would give a lot just to see the likes of Vivian, Jr Troopa, Bobbery or Rawk Hawk at least make a cameo or to hear a remix from any of the first three games, but it doesn't seem to be the case and I just felt like I had to come to terms with that fact and with Toadette, Nabbid, Petey, King Bob-omb,Ninjis and the Koopalings there are at least many regular Mario charas that I'm happy to see, but I'm aware that not everyone will feel that way.

The thing is I can't help but wonder why the Paper Mario representation is the way it is, is it because Intelligent Systems has no part in the crossover and Alphadream being restricted, or did Miyamoto get high again?

I just don't get why. Why do they have to make these games so "clean"?
Did some people feel alienated by the older Paper Mario games? Or is it really just Miyamoto being arrogant?

That could be, actually. I don't know, but it could be an explanation.
Like, they were planning to put Paper Mario characters in, but then somebody was like "Would you do that? We need to make the games accessible for everyone, and many people don't know those characters. I think it'd be better making them Toads."

That would literally be the opposite of Smash Bros, a series that references everything (except Wario Land) to make people feel nostalgic.

Not referencing anything because SOME kids may not get the references would be really really dumb.
I think it's more likely that they'd want to find out about the references, learn about the other Paper Mario games and then would wanna buy them too.

Maybe they felt with the first 3 games it kept progressing too far way from the Mario type setting? I mean the first Paper Mario was perfectly Mario like with a couple of new species and locations added to the mix. The second one took place away from the usual setting but wasn't too foreign. Then Super Paper Mario despite its more typical Mario gameplay(for a non RPG) it felt the least Mario like in terms of setting. Maybe they wanted to go back to feeling like the first game but made it too "safe".

I'm really starting to feel like Miyamoto or some higher up in a supervisor type role got involved again...

i heard the game has a fair amount of references to the earlier M&L

maybe its because it's developed by Alpha Dream and they dont care about paper mario too much

The usage of only existing characters and the NSMB style locations that have been mentioned several times by now threw me off but perhaps Alpha Dream is just running out of ideas?
