Just a few notes here:
Plumber’s Cave
Unused Wario Land Shake It song. Disco remix of the SMB Underground theme. Unknown what the intention for the song was. It was posted to tcrf one time but was deleted since it wasn’t verifiable. It is unknown the true origins of this song and if it was even made for the game.
I debunked this in a video:
Tomoya Tomita owns the tracks he himself composed for Wario Land Shake It, and is the main reason why anything beyond Stonecarving City hasn’t reappeared in other games
Is this verifiable? I guess it can be implied given he uploads remastered versions on YouTube, but has he ever said this specifically? Source links don't seem to indicate so.
Maybe I'll reach out on Twitter.
A lot more has been datamined from that, including unused enemies and objects:
Saw this on The Cutting Room Floor and thought it was neat. Basically, the file wario4land_gba_ique\src\global.h,v has this code starting from line 572:
Code:
/*
enum WAR_STAT_VAMP
{
VPCHNG,
VPBAT,
VPTURN,
VPWALK,
VPJUMP,
VPHAJIK,
VPEND,
VPSTOP,
};
*/
From what I can tell, it's code for Vampire Wario's non bat form, or at least a reference to it. Presumably this version was planned for Wario Land 4 as well at some point:
But yeah, anyone want to investigate it more? Figure out if there's still working functionality for this in the game?
Over on Discord, someone pointed out that the internal names for Wario Land 4's enemies could be found in the Nintendo Gigaleak files. And, after eventually tracking down said files, I can now confirm this to be true.
So, for reference purposes, here's every enemy in the game and what's it called internally:
Spear-Masks
- ZAKO_MEN_YARI: Yellow Spear-Mask
- ZAKO_MEN_YARI_BLUE: Blue Spear-Mask
- ZAKO_MEN_YARI_RED: Red Spear-Mask
Marumen
- ZAKO_MARUMEN: Purple Marumen
- ZAKO_MARUMEN_Z: Red Marumen

The Mario Mandate
People believe that Nintendo has enforced a mandate on the Mario series that heavily restricts the creation and use of characters outside of the main Mario series in spinoffs and other creations. This would have taken effect in the mid-Wii lifecycle, as evidenced by the games at the beginning and end of its life. This is believed to be why there hasn’t been a new Wario Land game since, due to the fact it falls outside what Nintendo wants the Mario series to be. However, there is no actual evidence of this being real and is only theory.
The Mario mandate only affects characters based on existing Mario species, not fully original ones created for a particular game/outside of that setup. That's why Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Brothership were mostly unaffected by it, since the vast majority of characters in those games were new.
It almost certainly wouldn't affect Wario because well... the series barely uses anything based on the Mario series as a whole. Like what is Mario inspired in the series?
Well, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 has Goomba variants as common enemies, a Thwomp variant as common enemies and a boss based on a Hammer Bro:
Also
Munchers, which go unedited.
All but the Pirate Gooms vanish from Wario Land II onwards, and after that game, there are no more Mario character variants at all.
Everyone in Wario Land 4 is Dead
The entire cast of Wario Land is dead, which is implied by most characters being ghosts such as the bosses and certain enemies. This includes Princess Shokora who ascends to heaven at the end of the game.
Everyone feels like a bit of a stretch here. As the blog itself says, we can confirm that Princess Shokora and the five of the bosses seem to be ghosts, along with the ghost from Crescent Moon Village and (maybe) Hoggus from Doodle Woods.
But the vast majority of these guys don't seem to be ghosts:
Wario Land 4 is a platformer game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2001. It was later re-released for the Nintendo 3DS on December 16, 2011 via the Nintendo 3DS...

It's likely that
Skeleton Birds,
Men'onos and
Onomīs are undead, but that's about it.
