maybe it was a mistake to call it "donkey kong country returns" and keep using the DKC nameplate

I really don't think they needed to be called Donkey Kong Country, as it's an old brand with a very particular set of styles and traditions. I also think Koopaul is right to argue in favour of the new games. They're worth fighting for. This sort of thing happens in every medium... (film, literature, etc.) The new always contrasts with the old.

idle thought: one of the (many) bad aspects of the GBA versions of the first two DKCs is how they played the added story segments depresingly straight

Well I actually liked Cranky's commentary about the bosses.

I reckon that was the last instance old Cranky was true to his name or origins. Why did every other company turn him soft and dull afterwards? Did Nintendo find him too brash/not family-friendly enough, and decide to 'neuter' him the moment Rare was out of the picture?

Still, Rare weren't always bang-on with their characters. I really disliked their final useage of Cranky (remember "Cranky's Dojo" in the DKC3 port/remake?)

Yes, I agree, but I like his role in DKC Returns which is much more true to his origins: full of sarcastic, fourth wall-breaking commentary on the player's skills. ¨I give this balloon 30 seconds before it pops.¨
