Upcoming Game Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (October 6th 2017)

Another complaint I have is the sound design.
(Without getting into the music itself)
The sound effects aren't really satisfying a lot of the time. Like the sounds for Mayro and Loogy charging up and releasing their hand powers.
Say what you will about the GBA's sound quality, but one thing is certain: The sfx packed a punch!
A lot of the new ones sound weak and flimsy in comparison.
And during some cutscenes it even felt like they forgot to put in sfx at all. Like, sometimes I could've sworn that a character had a specific sound clip in a scene but it's just not there. Like Luigi going "Ooohohoho~" when he gets embarassed.

On an unrelated note, you know what I hate? When there's a shiny, sparkly object in a game that still, for SOME REASON is as dark as everything else in the room:

There are beams of light coming from it. Why isn't it lit up!?

...which isn't nearly as funny as the original. I just love how Mario doesn't even realize he messed up in the GBA version and just whacks Luigi with maximum determination. And poor Weeg just has to take the abuse.
Either that or he wants to make the best of the situation and tries his hand at a Knockback Bros.
 
I'm currently playing through the Bowser's Minions quest. It's alright, for a bonus minigame.

Something I noticed tho, the Elite Trio show up in the story, but they are wearing their outfits they got after being promoted, even though that hasn't happened yet, at that point in time.
How could they miss such an obvious inconsistency? Was it too much work to paint their hats blue and red again and removing Sergeant Guys's flag?

In general, I don't know if I like all of the added story elements.
For example, Fawful.
At this point in the timeline he was not yet the powerful force he would become in M&L:BiS, but for some reason he already has an army of Mechawfuls at his command. If that's the case, why did he not use them against Mario & Luigi? And if he's still just Cackletta's henchman, why is he allowed to shape those robots in his own image? He's supposed to be an underling, not the one in charge of the operation.
You can't take a character who starts out as an underling and then becomes the big bad guy himself, but then retroactively make it so they were always already the big bad guy all along.
Fawful's rise was supposed to be a slow process. So slow, he didn't even do anything evil for an entire game. He was just plotting, scheming, thinking... He needed time to develop into the big bad guy. He wasn't just like "Oh, Cackletta is dead. Guess I'm gonna do all the evil now."
But now he comes across like they plucked future Fawful out of BiS and just stuck him here, in the past.
Future Fawful could build an army of robots.
Past Fawful? I'm not buying it.

Past Fawful was capable of some great stuff, sure, but him and Cackletta were still a team and Fawful didn't always have all the answers.
...and he surely didn't have an army of robots he only used once but then conveniently never had again.

I really don't think this Mario & Luigi deserves THIS much backlash. I've just completed the whole thing, and while they did let some graphical things slip, they did add a few things as well.
Mario And Luigi panicked for a moment when bowser's castle was about to go down.
This installment still has so much charm on it's own. The bosses are a bit more balanced as well. And like others are saying, I really wouldn't call the Minion Quest a minigame either. It's a fully fledged sidestory with long lasting elements to it. As I said before, the original really isn't going anywhere, there are still ways to play that. But you should look at this game as if it's its own thing, not a copy of the other.

Sorry if that sounded a bit snarky, but I felt the need to defend this game. I thought Paper Jam was a lot worse.

Don't worry, that's not my genuine opinion. I was just being a hyperbolic dick. :STongue:
It simply doesn't have enough to offer that I personally like but I'm not gonna fault it for that. It's simply not my thing. (Though I still wouldn't say it has as much depth as the main game. Length? Maybe. Depth? Debatable.)

Keep in mind, I (and some others) may have a lot of small gripes with the game, but that doesn't mean we think it's overall a bad remake.
I think it's still mostly positive (I bought it, after all.) It just suffered from some cut corners, so it's not perfect. But it's so close to being perfect, that all the easily avoidable flaws are all the more frustrating. It's like... the game was SO CLOSE. If they had just gone that LIIIITTLE extra step...

But you should look at this game as if it's its own thing, not a copy of the other.
It's not a copy, but it's still a remake. So comparisons have to be made. it's not like it's a re-imagining like Samus Returns or Zero Mission or even Super Mario 64 DS, those games made it a point to be different.
But when a game like Superstar Saga is already so close to the original, the parts that ARE changed will stick out even more. And if they are changed for the worse... might as well talk about them.
A good remake should put just as much effort into itself as the original game did.
And when changes are made, they need to make sense.
A remake is an opportunity to improve a game, not take away from it.

Yes, a cut character doesn't ruin the entire game, but it also doesn't make it better.
 
I've been wondering, if they hadn't spent time and resources on making Bowser's Minions and instead had put those resources into improving the remake, how much better would it have been?
They could've finished the sprites instead of rushing them out, they could've added a harder mode, or a second quest (new game plus), they could've added a Boss Rush/Boss Arena, they could've added a retro music mode that lets you switch to the old songs (which are already in the game's files).
They could've added additional challenges, like those achievement-like challenges in Dream Team...
There's a lot they could've done to improve the original game.
What they did instead is very hit or miss, depending on what you are interested in.
