But is it really? Everyone acts like Earthbound's marketing was Too Gross and is single-handely the reason why it failed, but EVERY Nintendo ad from that period was like that
Well I guess the 90s were a time of "extreme" but I feel they went out of their way to make it seem as if the game itself was gross and that the grossness was the only thing the game was about. The Yoshi's Island commercial is pretty gross but at least it's sort of relevant to the game considering Yoshi and eating everything. Earthbound's marketing made it seem as if the game itself was some sort of video game version of Terrence and Phillip from South Park or something.

I was speaking generally, because fans of Earthbound seems to single-handely blame Teh Marketing for the game's western failure and not that well, JRPGS beside Pokemon and Final Fantasy aren't that successful in the west (and especially not at the time the game was released) or that its grafx don't compare well for 1994.
Furthermore, marketing isn't just TV and magazine ads. Bundling the game with a strategy guide is also a marketing decision.

We thought the city was taking down the tree where my sister's boyfriend hung himself, we were about to get mad because that's where we put cards like "we miss you" and stuff, my younger sister even "shared" chips with him on Halloween. Turns out they were only fixing some spots, they took down other trees but not the tree.
It's a shame his kids will grow up not really knowing their father, but I have some fun stories with him to shear with his kids when they grow up a bit more, we were playing Left 4 dead and I locked him out of the safety room for the Zombies to take him, lol. Things were said but it was all fun and games.
