Puyo Puyo

Fair enough. I'm just bitter due to how terrible Sega has been lately and I absolutely do not want to buy into anything that they've been doing. Also I can't see myself spending 30 dollars on a mediocre selection of games. They might as well put in stuff like Flicky and Sonic Eraser.

Oh, I'm bitter with them, too. I'm just taking what I can be getting, even if it isn't much.

I've heard something about a new CEO and wanting change...but I'll believe it when I really see it.

It is true that this means nothing for the future of overseas Puyo Puyo, since it was only kept in due to being part of a collection with unrelated games ( including Sega's cash hedgehog), the collection itself is nothing to write home about and it's not like I haven't played Tsu to death already via the Mega Drive/VC version and Ketteiban.

The thing is just that after 7 years of the series not seing a non dressed up western release (no Mean Bean or Cranky Food BS) I'll take anything, granted it's been easy to get by with importing in the past, but seing the series getting any kind of overseas exposure or release is refreshing, even thought it will likely not mean a damn thing in the long run.

Plus, the idea of being able to play a portable version of Tsu, without having to resort to an emulator on my phone is pretty neat in my eyes, then again I'm fully expecting them to skip Europe with this release, so it's not like I'll see any of it.

I get it now. I guess I was confused since while you two have been feeling desperate for Puyo and this is somewhat relieving I've been feeling disgusted and this just further adds to my disgust.

And I get you as well, heck, I'll openly admit that you have more of a standard, then me, for not buying into a medicore at best collection, simply for the small benefit of a portable version of one of the games and it having been a while since the last western Puyo release

Aside from the rebuilt coding, this just looks like a throwaway collection put together that was initially Japan only but got localized for God-knows-what reason.

medicore at best collection

M2 is the best porting house in the business and there was some demand to have the retail collection released in the west. Their ports have ton of love put into them (see this interview where they talk about how they went out of their way to replicate a throaway scanline bug in Space Harrier) and have great extras (for ex, the 3D Classics version of After Burner II has a brand new mode by the director of Ikaruga) . The 3D Classics line is not throwaway Digital Eclipse/Terminal Reality-style mediocrity.

this is why we can't have nice rereleases of older games

I was speaking more of the selection than the quality of the ports. Do people really want Altered Beast and Maze Walker?

As I mentioned in my profile I just started to play Madou Monogatari ARS, I went with Schezo's story first and while I'm still not that very far, I'm already counting quite a few things that were introduced in this game, some of which were pretty suprising for me:

First off, the this theme from Tower of the Magician:

Is actually a remix of this theme:

Secondly, Schezo's standard outfit from 15th Anniversary onwards, actually comes from here (and Waku Waku Puyo Dungeon) :

Speaking of Waku Waku Puyo Dungeon, that game had Doppelganger Schezo as the main antagonist, thought he made his debut here, as a generic enemy.

One song in the game is called "The Gorgeous Man Who Defile The God", which would later also be used as the name for Schezo's theme in Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary.

In Addition to all that, I already know that Owlbear makes his first Puyo/Madou appearence as the main antagonist of Arle's story.

Granted I know that pre-Fever Puyo took a ton of things from the Madou series (after all it is a spin off) and with this being the first Madou game after the original trilogy it makes sense that it would still introduce a lot of stuff that would show up in later installments, but experiencing the origins of a lot of these things first hand is part of the fun for me, I had that exact same feeling when I played Madou 2.

You know...I don't think I ever posted the image commissions I got back in comic con in 2015.

You see, I met this man named Jay Fosgitt. If you're into comics, you may know him as an artist on some things like some My Little Pony covers, as well as the creator of original work like Dead Duck and Bodie Troll.

Now, why do I bring this up in this thread of all places? Well...I'll let the images I commissioned speak for themselves.

I think he did a great job. I'll admit, he didn't capture Feli's personality...but I blame myself more; he didn't know a lot about the series, and I didn't give him too much to work with. Besides, I think he did a good job with what he did have. And that's all I can ask. :)

EDIT: Fixed some links.

It has taken me longer then expected, due to RL responsibilitys demanding my time and efforts, but I'm done with Schezo's ARS story.

After this playtrough I'm really feeling like I got the hang of how to play Madou Monogatari competently, I still had some rather clumsy moments in Madou 2, but here I already had the ideas of how to effectivly fight and explore.

Generally speaking it provited me the Madou fare I was expecting, which I mean in a positive way, especially since it does improve the things that I wasn't a huge fan of in Madou 2, such as the brutal difficulty spikes and doing away with the warp ability. One strange thing thought is the fact that the command you used last will always move one space up on your grid, which led me to use Diacute or Healing, instead of attacking a few times, which to be honest was more of a result of me being hasty, as long as you pay attention it's not an issue at all, it just caught me off guard at first, since I wasn't expecting it.

While I couldn't read a damn thing I did still enjoy the story, the knowledge of the basic premise ''14 year old Schezo get's sucked into a mirror and finds himself in a dungeon, where he learns to use dark magic, including his signature spell Areiado, defeats the Dark Sword in battle and thus proves himself worthy to wield it, beats Runelord in battle and inherits the title of dark wizard from him and finds his way back home'' works well enough for me and still manages to be memorable.

I absolutely loved the music, which is a very subjective matter I'm aware, but ''Temporal Tempel'', ''The Sword Of Darkness'', ''The Gorgeous Man Who Defile The God'', ''The Beginnings Of The Dark Wizard'' or the shop theme are all great songs in my eyes (or ears) and music just really adds to the experience for me.

The language barrier was a bit more of a hurdle here in comparison to Madou 2 and Tower Of The Magician, thanks to a walktrough that I had on stand by (as usual) it wasn't much of an issue, but I had to go back to it around four times, for tasks that take mere seconds, which wasn't really annoying, but it does take you out of it for a bit, especially when you can handle the rest of the game with relative ease.

I wish I could go into deeper detail, but I would just end up repeating several things I said since I first played Tower Of The Magician, since as already mentioned, it's the same Madou fare I already know and love and all I really wanted to say is that I liked it, a lot even.

I'll hold off on starting the other two storys for the next two weeks, since school is going to be quite demanding in that timeframe, until then I leave you with one of my favorite moments in the game so far:

Cool to see you going through the Madou games. I've been wanting to for the longest time to try them out but the language barrier has been putting me off. Not so much for the difficulty of getting through the game but not fully understanding what's going on ruins the experience for me a bit.

While I put playing the other two ARS storys on hold, until I really have enough time to give them all of my focus, I figured that in the meantime I could record Schezo's story for my channel, since I still have that one very fresh on my mind and taking 40 minutes per day to play something that I'm already familiar with and check if everything recorded without any hickups, is easy to do and doesn't distract from other prioritys.

I just figured this one would be fun to do, especially since I still needed to figure some things out on my own even with the (obviously japanese) walktrough, so making my own one where I eloborate on some things in the description, for the sake of potentially giving those that want to play the game themselves an easier time seemed like a cool thing to do

The first floor admitingly isn't too exciting, since Sukiyapodes rarely showed himself and I was collecting cash for items, but starting with the second floor I made an effort to move things along at a decent pace, also that wolf boy sucker can poison you, which is indicated by the change in music, also here are the important notes from the description :

''The 10/20 gold items restore health and magic energy respectivly and the 30 gold item heals poison, thought it needs some time before it takes effect.
You want to get the item drop at 11:15, since that is the item you need to give to the monkey in order to proceed, you also need to use it once, bevore you can give it to him.''

I'm looking forward to see whether or not my first ever recorded playtrough will go smoothly or if the recording curse will find a way to haunt me, either way I just figured I'd share it here, if nobody minds.

Well, if you wanna get technical, Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God is part of the Madou Monogatari series, and the only one to see an American release. It also...doesn't use any of the original characters.

Though unlike Cranky Food Friends, this one actually has an excuse; Sega never bought the Madou Monogatari rights despite essentially owning its world, so Compile Heart, who was tasked with making this one, couldn't use the original characters if they wanted to.

Whether or not you tolerate who's new is another matter entirely, since many characters are expies of the old cast. It's my personal headcanon that Gigadis is a massive Satan fanboy trying to act just like his hero, but that's nothing official.

Still, at least it has a reason to not use the original cast. I don't like it either, but unfortunately, reality bites sometimes.

Oh yeah, there is also that game.

To this day I'm still on the fence on whether or not I should try out Sorcery Saga, it won't be any time soon as it is, since I don't own a Vita and have no desire to get one, but I can't help but be curious.

The thing is the fact that it doesn't feature any of the old characters isn't even a turn off for me (that was unavoidable), what does turn me off a bit is the fact that the new characters are such painfully obvious expys that it's really hard for me to see them as their own characters and not just similar as possible replacements due to copyright, it still wouldn't be the same if they were unique characters in their own right, but it would have been far easier to look at the game as it's own thing, that also happens to be part of the Madou series and I know that's not what they were going for, but it would have been a better route to take in my personal opinion.

With that said I can't comment on the quality of the game, but if I remember correctly you have played the game, right Surrealbrain? If you did, what was your opinion on it?

It's fun enough, though it can be a bit irritating at times. And I'm with you on it not being the same without the original characters. That said, I'd say it's still decent, if not great, and certainly worth at least a cursory look.

Though while it's toned down compared to their usual fare, some of Compile Heart's fanservice is still there, which may or may not be a problem in itself, depending on your tolerance of that. Though it's like I said, it doesn't seem as prevalent here.

I'm still sticking by my headcanon. I would like to commission an image where Gigadis is happily asking for Satan's autograph, with Satan himself being visibly freaked out. Or an image of Gigadis just being a general fanboy.

I see, decent, but not great is good enough for me,so I should look up more stuff from the game myself, to getter a better idea of it and to see if the problems it has would be any potential dealbreakers for me.
