    Other modes would be a lot more work to an otherwise huge game. Costumes on the otherhand...

    I just noticed that the Mushroom Kingdom in Odyssey doesn't have those tall multicolor hills that "modern Mario" seems to be known for since NSMBW.

    In fact they were present as early as Super Mario World, but instead enirely green and not as prominent as in New SMB and so on.

    Odyssey really feels like Mario has finally "grown up". Note how this game is embracing most of the trappings of modern gaming...

    Yep. It's also marking the end of Mario's dark age, aka the Wii U era where every game was a New Super Mario Bros style experience with little in the way of interesting ideas.

    Hardware was Yokoi's doing. He was not a character designer at all. That's Hiroji Kiyotake in that particular division of Nintendo, who designed Samus, Duck Hunt(!), Pit and, of course, Wario.

    I agree, 2D Mario needs something completely new and original, I don't hate the NSMB games and I find them to be fun games, but they have long overstayed their welcome by this point and you can only repeat a formula for so long (And they certainly hadn't changed much.) and after what Odyssey did for 3D Mario, it's time for 2D Mario to shine just as brightly, something completely new and unexpected while also building and improving upon what made the original 2D games so beloved by many as well as the NSMB Quadrilogy

    When i was young i already realized that Paper Mario was its spiritual successor. I kinda get though since one is pseudo 3D and the other takes it all the way.

    Mario Party is a favorite pastime for me and my siblings, but unfortunately, I'm the only one among us with a 3DS, which means any of the 3DS installments lose their main value in local multiplayer. It looks like a fun game, but not one that I can make much use of, unfortunately.

    Most instances of that seem to be tongue-in-cheek. The majority of the folks populating this site (especially those who lean towards the Land series) are at least moderate Mario fans.

    Yes I agree with that. Because ¨glorified obstacle course¨ is indeed how I see the recent platformer games. Especially NSMB 2.
